This paper examines the distinct and revisionary concepts of nature articulated by 19th-century American women poets,arguing that their work constitutes a significant departure from dominant anthropocentric paradigms exemplified by Puritan theology,Romantic transcendentalism,and masculinist frontier narratives.Focusing primarily on Celia Thaxter,alongside Frances Sargent Osgood,Lucy Larcom,and Alice Cary,the analysis demonstrates how these poets rejected nature’s conventional framing as either a hostile wilderness opposed to civilization or a symbolic resource for Euro-American spiritual transcendence.Instead,they developed visions centered on nature’s intrinsic agency and autonomous operation.Thaxter emerges as a pivotal figure,forging a groundbreaking“mechanistic”view of nature as fundamentally indifferent to human concerns-governed by its own laws and manifesting simultaneous beauty and brutality without moral intent.This perspective,anticipating American literary Naturalism,starkly contrasts with the unsentimental yet appreciative depictions of nature’s inherent beauty found in Osgood,Larcom,and Cary.Collectively,these poets displaced Western metaphysical binaries(man vs.nature),prioritizing observation over idealization and representing nature on its own terms as an autonomous system or object of aesthetic appreciation,thereby achieving a crucial recasting of nature within 19th-century American literature. 展开更多

The Mists of Avalon is widely regarded as a feminist retelling of the Arthurian legend:Set in the Middle Ages,it is infused with Marion Zimmer Bradley’s modern views on religion,sexuality,and gender,opposes the hierarchies epitomized by patriarchy,and seeks to overturn stereotypes of women.Yet the women Bradley portrays-and the Goddess religion she constructs-remain deeply conditioned by patriarchal culture.The priestess Morgaine can preserve the Goddess religion only by relying on male kingship,and her own subjectivity remains absent;the rivalry between Gwenhwyfar and Morgaine,though seemingly free of male presence,is at its core a contest for the support of male power;and Bradley’s own religious experience suggests that she advocated raising women’s status within religion on the premise of accepting Christianity-a religious revisionism rather than a rejection of Christianity.Analyzing the patriarchal shadow over the novel from these three perspectives,this paper argues that The Mists of Avalon is not a radically anti-Christian feminist work,and hopes thereby to alert readers to how deeply rooted social assumptions,taken for granted,may obstruct the healthy development of society. 展开更多

Translating traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)knowledge requires the transformation of“local knowledge”into“universal knowledge”rather than mere linguistic conversion.This study takes the translated medical cases of Li Ping’er(李瓶儿)in Jin Ping Mei(《金瓶梅》The Plum in the Golden Vase)as the research object,and systematically examines the translation practice and communication effect of three core categories of TCM knowledge in David Tod Roy’s(芮效卫)English translation,namely pulse diagnosis,fundamental TCM theories,and TCM medicinal and formula treatment.As a landmark work in the overseas dissemination of Jin Ping Mei,Roy’s translation restores the literary,social,and cultural value of the original text through complete translation and detailed annotations,and strikes a balance between literary narrative fluency and textual fidelity.Nevertheless,as the translator is limited by his professional background,there are deviations in his translation of some core TCM concepts,which fail to fully convey the diagnostic and therapeutic logic of TCM.This is a common dilemma faced by literary translators when rendering the highly specialized TCM system.This study offers insights into the interpretation of TCM knowledge for Western audiences in translated literary texts,forming a more accurate and in-depth understanding of TCM as a unique knowledge system in cross-cultural communication. 展开更多

This study examines the intersection of oral tradition and gender dynamics within an African cultural context,arguing that patriarchal structures embedded in oral forms have historically silenced women’s voices while simultaneously providing tools for their resistance and self-assertion.In many traditional societies,women have functioned primarily as listeners rather than narrators of their own histories due to entrenched patriarchal norms(Lerner,1986,p.212).Drawing on feminist and African womanist theory,this paper explores how oral traditions-proverbs,rituals,songs,folktales,and praise forms-serve as cultural repositories that construct and reinforce gender roles in Bakossi society as represented in Emmanuel Alobwed’Epie’s The Lady With a Beard(Alobwed’Epie,2005,p.14).The study further demonstrates that although these traditions have often relegated women to passive roles,female characters in the novel appropriate the same cultural spaces that marginalize them to articulate agency,narrate their experiences,and challenge patriarchal authority(Nnaemeka,2013,p.364).Through qualitative textual analysis of the novel alongside ethnographic insights into Bakossi oral culture,the paper shows how Alobwed’Epie’s use of orality reveals the profound impact of gendered cultural norms on the African woman while simultaneously envisioning transformation.The emergence of the“new African woman”,embodied in the protagonist Emade,signifies a shift from silent endurance toward active negotiation of power and identity(Ogundipe-Leslie,1994,p.32).Ultimately,the study advocates a redefinition of gender roles grounded in cultural continuity yet oriented toward equity,asserting that oral tradition can function not only as a repository of patriarchy but also as a medium of feminist reconstruction and social change. 展开更多

Aldous Huxley underwent a gradual intellectual shift from Western scientific rationalism toward Eastern medical and philosophical traditions as a lifelong patient and a pacifist.This transition marked a movement from curing disease toward cultivating health in its full complexity across individual,social,and ecological dimensions.This late vision of holistic health is subtly shaped by traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)and Daoism.While merging into his writings as a pan-Eastern philosophy with Zen,Mahayana Buddhism and Tantra,acupuncture,Tai Ji Quan and Daoist thoughts influenced the writer’s understanding of holistic health in a more physically oriented way.In Huxley’s last novel,Island(1962),these three dimensions were respectively nurtured through body-mind alignment,non-coercive social organization guided by Wu Wei(无为non-action),and harmonious coexistence with nature following the principle of“Order of Things”,the synonym Huxley used for“Tao”.Together,they form a vision of health that is preventive,relational,and fundamentally integrated,seeing mind and body,individual and society,human and nature as one interdependent whole.The reading of Island from the perspective of TCM and Daoist principles reveals their potential to reshape literary and cultural understandings of well-being.The convergence of TCM,Daoism,and literary imagination in Island opens fertile ground for interdisciplinary inquiry toward a more balanced,sustainable,and holistically healthier future for humanity. 展开更多

Vladimir Nabokov once criticized the “smug philistinism”, or poshlust, that emanated from the art of advertisement. For Nabokov, poshlust is phony depth, cheap imitation, and aesthetic falseness disguised as virtue, beauty, or sophistication that may lead to moral indictment. Such a pretense and brandishing of one’s “higher aesthetic taste” echoes the meticulous descriptions of the elements of consumerism in Lolita. Building on Nabokov’s definition of poshlust as a fusion of the falsely refined and the vulgarly sentimental, this article discovers that Humbert is inherently an “adman”, or a bourgeois philistine whose construction of the “nymphet” is not merely a personal aesthetic imagination and delusion, but a product of a broader cultural aesthetic-one shaped by advertising, popular media, and mass-market taste. This aesthetic imagination of Humbert experiences stages of fetishism, the realization of obsolescence, and ultimately results in Humbert’s disillusionment in finding the irreconcilability between “true art” and the décor of the desire of obsession and possession. Lolita thus parallels Humbert’s advocacy of art’s distance from real life and exposes the tragic consequences of commodifying beauty, reducing identity to style, and mistaking obsession for love. 展开更多

This thesis takes as its subject the classic novel My Brilliant Career by Australian writer Miles Franklin,focusing on the independent personality of the protagonist Sybylla Melvyn and the bush predicament in which she is entangled.The study argues that Sybylla’s three geographical displacements-from Possum Gully to Caddagat and then to M’Swat-constitute a mode of“resistant”existence,through which she subverts Victorian-era feminine discipline and the capitalist logic of courtship and marriage.The paper offers an innovative interpretation of the Australian bush as a double-sided symbol that functions simultaneously as a site of oppression and a source of vitality,and it points out that the fractured nature of Sybylla’s personality-a weave of pride and self-abasement-serves precisely as a spiritual specimen of cultural transition within the colonial context.Ultimately,this thesis demonstrates that the essence of independent personality is not a triumph but a process of continuously transforming external oppression into inner freedom.This finding not only provides a new interpretive angle for feminist literary criticism,but also offers profound historical experience for modern individuals grappling with the algorithmic cage and the alienation of consumerism. 展开更多

As a foundational figure in Afrofuturist literary tradition,Octavia Butler deploys speculative fiction in Parable of the Sower to critically deconstruct the themes of race,power,and historical memory.Utilizing Afrofuturism as its theoretical framework,this paper analyzes the historical metaphors and future imaginaries in Parable of the Sower through the lens of Afrofuturist historiography and futurity.It argues that,through its dual engagement with history and the future,this novel not only disrupts the white-centered futurist narrative,reconstructing black history,but also amplifies the voice of the African American community and opens up possibilities for marginalized groups to imagine alternative futures.By depicting the process of home destruction and the subsequent rebuilding of a multiracial community through the perspective of a young black girl,Lauren,whose hyperempathy as a medium that bridges history and the future,Butler subverts the conventional linear narrative of progress and vividly demonstrates the agency and subjectivity of African Americans within both disaster and futurist narratives. 展开更多

Drawing on Hayden White’s meta-historical theory,this thesis examines the logic of character reconstruction in Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall.While existing scholarship on the novel has fruitfully explored Cromwell’s image,marginal figures,and narrative technique,it has tended to treat characters either as reflections of the archival record or as autonomous literary creations,leaving under-examined the meta-historical principles that govern Mantel’s construction of character at the intersection of fact and imagination.This thesis addresses that gap by deploying White’s tripartite framework of actuality,possibility,and reality.Actuality refers to the anchoring of characters in verifiable historical persons,events,and contexts;possibility designates the imaginative filling of archival silences with plausible experiences and motives;reality denotes the achieved effect of lived emotional truth,produced through sensory immersion and the restricted narrative perspective that positions the reader as a virtual witness within Cromwell’s consciousness.The thesis argues that Mantel’s character construction proceeds through an integration of these three modes,and that this integration embodies a meta-historical consciousness in which historical truth is understood as a constructive interplay rather than a passive inheritance from the archive.The study aims to move beyond the fact-versus-fiction binary and to offer a more precise account of how contemporary historical fiction generates its distinctive kind of truth. 展开更多
