With the development of 5th Generation Mobile Communication Technology(5G),industrial internet, artificial intelligence, smart manufacturing, smart construction, and other new technologies or new industries,a new infrastructure has emerged. The scale and the spatial distribution structure of new infrastructure across various regions of China from 2020 to 2022 were measured based on the official annual engineering construction project plans, and the impacts of the digital economy were analyzed by using the spatial Durbin model. The results indicate that the new infrastructure projects are mainly distributed in Eastern,Central, and Southern China.Meanwhile, the Moran’s I index demonstrates a statistically significant positive spatial autocorrelation, indicating that there is a significant trend of spatial agglomeration among these new infrastructure projects. The digital economy is significantly affecting the spatial distribution of the new infrastructure. The impact of the digital economy on the new infrastructure can cross regions and has significant spatial spillover effects, which reflects the virtual characteristic of the new infrastructure and digital economy. Therefore, various regions should coordinate the digital economic development needs of local and surrounding regions to rationally plan new infrastructure projects, ensuring the supporting capacity of infrastructure while preventing over-investment. 展开更多

This paper classifies the digital economy into pervasive and substitutive types.Within a multi-sector competitive equilibrium resource allocation framework,it mathematically derives the nuanced effects of the digital economy on labor reallocation.Furthermore,it employs a Double Machine Learning(DML)approach to empirically examine the heterogeneous effects and underlying mechanisms through which the digital economy influences labor misallocation. The results reveal two distinct reallocation effects. The pervasive digital economy exacerbates labor misallocation, whereas the substitutive digital economy alleviates it.Mechanism analysis shows that the pervasive type intensifies labor misallocation by inhibiting technological innovation and lowering the labor skill premium, while the substitutive type alleviates labor misallocation by promoting technological innovation and increasing the skill premium.Heterogeneity analysis indicates that these effects are more pronounced in southeastern coastal cities than in northwestern inland cities. Moreover, the pervasive digital economy generates stronger distortion effects under conditions of capital under-allocation,whereas the substitutive type exhibits greater optimization effects under capital over-allocation.These findings suggest that policy interventions should balance the substitution and integration effects of data elements, leverage digital integration to enhance labor factor market efficiency, and strengthen institutional protections for labor rights to mitigate the disruptive impacts of digital transformation. 展开更多

In the context of the revolution in new technologies,a key question is whether the rapid growth of the digital economy, driven by digital technologies, has improved regional innovation performance.Using inter-provincial panel data from China(2012–2022)and adopting a business environment perspective, this study applies a Panel Extended Regression Model(PERM),a Panel Simultaneous Equation Model(PSEM),and a Tobit-IV model to analyze how the development of the digital economy influences regional innovation. The results reveal a pronounced U-shaped relationship between the digital economy and the regional innovation performance at the provincial level in China, with the business environment serving as a significant mediator in this relationship. Moreover, regional innovation performance in China exhibits a“ratchet effect,”with the impact of the digital economy varying markedly across regions. While the eastern and western regions have entered an upward phase, whereby the digital economy boosts innovation, the central region displays a weaker effect.Further analysis indicates that the synergy between the business environment and the digital economy in driving innovation remains suboptimal. These findings were supported by robust checks. This study offers theoretical insights and empirical evidence that support the coordinated development of digital government and the digital factor market,as well as business environment reforms that are in alignment with the innovation demands of the digital era. 展开更多

Digital economy(DE)is on the verge of becoming a pivotal facilitator of the energy transition(ET).However,it remains to be seen to what extent China's outward foreign direct investment(OFDI)can stimulate the development of the DE and promote ET under the Belt and Road Initiative(BRI).Employing a nonparametric additive model, this study examines this issue by using panel data from 84 BRI countries spanning 2007–2022.The connections between China's OFDI and the DE and ET of BRI nations vary across different regions.China's OFDI has considerably fostered the ET of nations along its route to Central Asia,Europe,North Africa, and the Middle East.Conversely,in the Pacific and East Asian regions,China's OFDI has a constructive effect on the advancement of DE in participating nations. However, the effect of China's OFDI on the ET of nations in the Pacific Islands and East Asia and South Asia is statistically insignificant. Moreover,China's OFDI impairs the DE of nations in Central Asia and Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America,as well as North Africa and the Middle East.Notably, the net effect of China's OFDI on ET is positive;however, the mediating effect of facilitating ET through DE is not pronounced. 展开更多

The digital economy has profoundly reshaped corporate governance and executive compensation structures.Using prefecture-level digital economy indices and panel data of Chinese A-share firms from 2008 to 2021,this study develops a theoretical framework to examine the impact of the digital economy on the executive compensation gap and its underlying mechanisms. The results show that:(a)There exists an inverted U-shaped relationship between the digital economy and the executive compensation gap, with a turning point at 0.4676;(b)The digital economy exerts an inverted U-shaped effect on internal control quality, which in turn further widens the executive compensation gap;(c)The heterogeneity analysis indicates that large firms and firms with CEO duality reach the turning point earlier, suggesting that the digital economy begins to narrow the executive compensation gap at an earlier stage in these firms. These findings provide new empirical evidence on executive compensation allocation in the context of the digital economy and offer policy implications for optimizing compensation structures and shaping the distributive effects of digital dividends. 展开更多

This paper provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of the digital economy policies in China and the European Union(EU).While both global actors strategically converge on prioritizing robust digital infrastructure, accelerating the twin(green and digital)transition, and legally recognizing data as a core macroeconomic asset, their underlying regulatory philosophies diverge fundamentally.China employs a state-led,sovereign-centric approach that harnesses its vast market scale to achieve technological self-reliance and maximize data utility for national security.Conversely, the EU champions a human-centric,rights-based paradigm, actively establishing preemptive global standards for data privacy, platform accountability, and artificial intelligence(AI)governance to protect democratic values.Understanding these divergent trajectories is increasingly crucial for navigating the fragmented landscape of global digital governance, mitigating cross-border data frictions, and anticipating the broader geopolitical dynamics of Sino-EU relations. 展开更多

This study, taking Shaanxi Province as an example, systematically analyzed the coupling and coordination relationship between the digital economy and high-quality agricultural development from 2015 to 2024 by comprehensively employing the coupling coordination model and the entropy method. The findings reveal that both the digital economy and high-quality agricultural development indices in Shaanxi Province exhibit a consistent upward trend. The level of coupling coordination has progressively transitioned from a low degree of coupling to a coordinated development stage, establishing a virtuous interactive pattern characterized by"digital enabling agriculture"and"agriculture driving innovation".The driving force behind this coupling primarily stems from the synergistic interplay of a triple mechanism involving"policy guidance, technological breakthroughs, and industrial support".However, structural imbalances persist across regions and agricultural segments, chiefly manifested as the digital divide between the Guanzhong Plain and the Northern(Shaanbei)and Southern(Shaannan)regions, alongside insufficient integration depth of digital technologies in the latter stages of the agricultural industry chain. To address these challenges, the study proposes recommendations including building a"tri-chain integrated"technological ecosystem, optimizing a differentiated policy support mechanism, and implementing regionally targeted strategies. These measures aim to foster deep integration of the digital economy with the entire agricultural value chain across diverse regions, offering pathways for western agricultural provinces to bridge the digital divide and achieve rural revitalization. 展开更多

Against the backdrop of the intertwined evolution of a new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation, the digital economy is reshaping the development paradigm of the cultural industry at an unprecedented depth and breadth. This paper introduces the cultural data lifecycle theory into the interdisciplinary research on digital economy and cultural industry, and constructs a full-cycle empowerment model covering the entire process of cultural data including generation, collection, organization, utilization, persistence, and extinction. It puts forward a“dualcreator”collaboration mechanism to resolve the dilemma of fractured cultural inheritance in the era of generative artificial intelligence. From the perspective of urban-rural integrated development, the paper reveals the spatial spillover effects and regional differentiation characteristics generated when the digital economy empowers the cultural industry, which provides more accurate empirical evidence for policy formulation.Taking the coupling relationship between the digital economy and the cultural industry as the core research object, this study breaks the limitations of traditional single-dimensional analytical frameworks and establishes a four-dimensional analysis model consisting of the demand side, supply side, circulation side, and governance side. With a four-wheel drive system of technology, content, institution, and talent,it systematically elaborates the internal operating mechanisms and practical paths for the digital economy to drive the indepth development of the cultural industry. This research possesses important theoretical values and practical significance for facilitating the cultural industry to grow into a pillar industry of the national economy and supporting the construction of a culturally powerful country. 展开更多

Against the backdrop of the coordinated advancement of Digital China construction and the dual carbon goals, exploring the enabling effect of the digital economy on the green transformation of micro-enterprises is of great theoretical and practical significance.Based on the resource-based view and information asymmetry theory, this paper takes China’s Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2013 to 2023 as research samples and constructs an enterprise digital economy development index.Adopting a two-way fixed effect model, this paper empirically examines the impact of the digital economy on corporate green technological innovation. The research results show that the digital economy can significantly promote enterprises’green technological innovation, and the conclusion remains valid after a series of robustness tests including substituting explained variables, lagging core explanatory variables, and Tobit model regression.Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the driving effect of the digital economy is more prominent in non-state-owned enterprises and heavily polluting industries.Mechanistically, the digital economy alleviates information asymmetry and financing constraints, thereby stimulating green R&D investment and innovation output. This paper finally puts forward targeted policy suggestions on improving digital infrastructure, implementing differentiated incentive policies, and promoting the integration of digital and real economies, which provides empirical evidence for the coordinated realization of high-quality economic development and ecological environmental improvement. 展开更多

Climate change caused by carbon emissions is a hot topic of concern.Enhancing carbon emission performance(CEP)emerges as a pivotal strategy to curtail carbon emissions, with the digital economy recognized as a crucial instrument for bolstering CEP.Grounded in theoretical analysis, this article takes the Yangtze River Delta region(YRD)as the research object and conducts empirical analysis for the period from 2010 to 2021.The Super Epsilon-Based Measure(EBM)model was employed to assess CEP,while the entropy method was used to quantify the level of the digital economy.Baseline regression models and mediation effect models were constructed to test the research hypotheses.Additionally, the Spatial Durbin Model(SDM)was utilized to analyze the spatial spillover effects of the digital economy. Some conclusions were drawn as follows.Firstly, both the digital economy and CEP exhibit growing trends and demonstrate significant spatial distribution characteristics.Cities with high CEP are increasingly concentrated along the Yangtze River and coastal areas.Meanwhile, the digital economy generally demonstrates a spatial distribution pattern of being higher in the southeast and lower in the northwest.Secondly, the digital economy exerts a notable and consistent positive influence on CEP,but this impact is not primarily achieved through promoting green technology innovation.Instead, the digital economy exhibits a stronger intermediary effect on CEP by facilitating industrial structure upgrading and rationalization.Thirdly, the digital economy significantly enhancing local CEP but having an insignificant impact on neighboring cities'CEP.To address these findings, cities ought to invest in digital infrastructure, incentivize digital innovation through policy and financial backing, and harness advanced technologies like 5G and blockchain to promote low-carbon,intelligent production and lifestyles, while enhancing industrial structure and regional cooperation to foster a low-carbon digital economy network. 展开更多

In the backdrop of“dual-carbon”strategic objectives, understanding the influence of the digital economy(DE)on carbon emissions(CEs)is imperative. However, there is limited research on the DE’s negative impact on CEs and the nonlinear relationship between the DE and CE.To address this gap,we collected data from 270 Chinese cities from 2011 to 2021 and used benchmark regression, mediated effects, and panel threshold models to explore the DE’s impact on CEs.The results showed that DE had a nonlinear, inverted U-shaped effect on CEs,with CEs initially increasing and then being suppressed. This conclusion remained consistent even after a series of robustness tests.Overall, the rate of urbanization and breadth of digital financial coverage mediate the relationship between the DE and CEs.Additionally, the combined effects of economic development, environmental regulation, fiscal decentralization, and population size contribute to the DE’s nonlinear impact on CEs.The impact of the DE on CEs varies among nonresource-based,resource-based,and resource-depleted cities and between urban and nonurban agglomerations. This paper’s findings support the development of the DE and the formulation of CE reduction policies. 展开更多
