Influence of basel stress fluctuations on the friction behavior of rock-ice granular flows:Insights from flume experiments 认领 引用

Rock-ice granular flows in high-altitude cold regions exhibit extreme mobility and destructive potential,posing severe threats to lives and infrastructure.Basal stress,governing the interaction between the flow and the underlying substrate,is critical for understanding their high mobility and erosion behavior.However,systematic investigations into basal stress fluctuations and their relationship with frictional behavior in rock-ice granular flows remain scarce,particularly regarding the effects of ice content and inclination angle.In this study,a series of flume experiments were conducted with ice contents ranging from 0%to 100%and flume inclination angles of 30°–45°.A triaxial force sensor and high-speed imaging with particle image velocimetry(PIV)were employed to measure basal normal and shear stresses,flow depth,and velocity.The results reveal that both normal and shear basal stresses initially increase slightly at 10%ice content but then decrease progressively as ice content increases further,while both stresses increase monotonically with inclination angle.These variations are attributed to the combined effects of hydrostatic pressure(overburden load and flow depth)and dynamic pressure(particle collisions and flow velocity).Dimensionless normal impulse decreases with ice content,whereas dimensionless tangential impulse increases,indicating enhanced normal interactions but weakened tangential interactions at higher ice concentrations.The maximum stress and standard deviation of stress both scale linearly with the time-mean stress,confirming that stress fluctuations are governed by bulk flow conditions(density,overburden load).The effective friction coefficientμshows a linear decrease with increasing ice content and a negative correlation with the Froude number Fr.Additionally,the normalized standard deviation of normal stress correlates positively withμ,while that of shear stress correlates negatively,suggesting that normal stress fluctuations from particle-substrate collisions enhance basal friction,whereas tangential fluctuations reduce it.These findings provide quantitative insights into the basal stress dynamics of rock-ice granular flows and establish a basis for improved hazard assessment and mitigation strategies in high-altitude mountain regions. 展开更多

Rock-ice avalanches in cold high-mountain regions pose severe hazards due to their high mobility,yet the quantitative controls of particle-size ratio and ice content remain insufficiently constrained.This study investigates their coupled effects using inclinedflume experiments and Discrete Element Method(DEM)simulations,covering three gravel sizes(2-5 mm,5-7 mm,7-10 mm)and four ice-content levels(0%,20%,40%,60%).Run-out distance,velocity,energy components,flow regime(Savage number),and segregation indexαwere quantified.Increasing ice content significantly enhances mobility,but with diminishing marginal effectiveness.From 0%to 40%ice content,run-out distance increases by 41%-86%,whereas the additional increase from 40%to 60%contributes only 12%-23%.Particle-size ratio strongly governs segregation intensity.Fine-gravel groups reach segregation indices ofα=0.92-0.98,indicating nearly complete upward migration of ice,whereas medium-gravel and coarse-gravel groups exhibit much weaker segregation,stabilizing atα=0.68-0.74 and 0.60-0.69.Savage number analyses reveal marked flow-regime transitions.At 0%ice content,Savage numbers reach 1.0-1.5,indicating a collisional regime.Increasing ice content suppresses collisionality,with Savage numbers decreasing to 0.03-0.07 at 60%ice content,consistent with dense-regime flow.DEM energy analyses confirm this regime shift:for finegravel mixtures,collision energy decreases by 14%,while sliding-friction energy increases by 33%as ice content increases from 0%to 60%,reflecting enhanced overburden effects imposed by upward-segregated ice layers.Medium and coarse mixtures exhibit weaker or opposite energy-shift patterns,demonstrating strong size dependence.Mechanistically,large particle-size contrasts promote strong segregation and form dense basal rock layers that increase basal friction and reduce mobility.When particle sizes are similar or ice content is high,segregation remains limited,allowing ice to mix into the basal layer,thereby reducing basal friction and enhancing mobility.This research quantitatively demonstrates how composition controls particle spatial distribution,flow regime,and energy dissipation,offering new mechanistic insights into the propagation and deposition behaviors of rock-ice avalanches and improving hazard assessment in vulnerable high-mountain regions. 展开更多

Despite the substantial progress of numerical methods in fluid mechanics,the complex multi-scale,multi-phase nature of turbulent flows continues to necessitate high-fidelity experimental data.As such,the development of a free-surface water tunnel(i.e.flume)capable of delivering high-speed,low-turbulence,free-surface flows is essential for fundamental research for marine applications.We report the design specifications and performance of a water flume recently constructed at the University of Iowa.The flume delivers high-speed(1.6 m/s),low-turbulence(<1.6%)uniform flows in an 8 m test section.The superior performance in delivering and maintaining well-conditioned flows over an extended test section is due to the properly designed upstream and downstream diffusers and the flow conditioners within.An additional high volumetric rate fluorescent dye visualization system was developed and employed for applications that challenge advanced laser-based measurement,particularly near the free-surface.The capability of the flume and associated instrumentation are demonstrated through an on-going investigation of the turbulent wake flow behind a surface-piercing 2D triangular wedge,revealing near free-surface coherent structures such as delayed vortex shedding and vortex-coupled,air-entrained tubes at high Froude numbers.The reported design details,in particular,the extended test section and downstream diffuser,will guide researchers developing similar hydrodynamic facilities for fundamental research. 展开更多

Sandy braided river deposits are widely preserved in ancient stratigraphic records and act as a significant type of hydrocarbon reservoir.Due to the frequent and rapid migration of channels within the riverbed,the sedimentary architecture is highly complex.In this paper,a flume experiment was conducted to reveal the detailed depositional process and establish a fine sedimentary architecture model for sandy braided rivers.The result showed that(1)Three types of braid channels,including the lateral migration channel,the confluence channel,and the deep incised channel,were recognized based on geometry,scale,distribution,and spatial patterns;they are interconnected,forming a complex channel network.(2)Braid channels were characterized by lateral migration,abandonment,filling,and chute cutoff.Lateral migration of channels shaped the braid bars and dominated the formation,growth,and reworking of braid bars.(3)Controlled by the fast and frequent variations of the braid channel network,braid bars were continuously formed,reworked,reshaped,and composited of multiple accretions with different types,orientations,scales,and preservation degrees.Symmetrical and asymmetrical braid bars pre-sented significantly different composition patterns.(4)Dominated by the continuous reworking of braid channels,temporary deposits were limited preserved,braid channel deposits account for 54.3 percent of the eventually preserved braided river deposits,and four types of amalgamate patterns were recognized.Braid bars were cut and limited preserved,only accounting for 45.7 percent of the eventually preserved braided river deposits.(5)During the experiment,only 28 percent of near-surface temporary deposits were eventually preserved in fragmented forms with the final experimental braided river;the shape,spatial patterns,and most of the deposits observed during the depositional process were largely reworked and poorly preserved.(6)The scale of eventually preserved braid bars and braid channels is significantly smaller than the temporary deposits from geomorphic observations.The aspect ratio of the eventually preserved braid bars and the width-to-depth ratio of the eventually preserved braid channel are also significantly different from that of the temporary ones measured from topography data. 展开更多

Flume experiments play a pivotal role in studying wave propagation,with wave elements typically assumed to remain constant in the perpendicular direction.However,evident cross wave phenomena were observed within flumes under certain conditions.This paper presents new analytical solutions for both primary and cross waves on double shoals in a flume via linear shallow-water equations,which may be used to idealize dynamic experimental configurations of coral reefs.The primary waves on double shoals are described by the associated Legendre functions,whereas the ultimate solutions are derived by considering the incident and reflected waves in front of a bathymetry and the transmitted waves positioned behind it.The effects of the angular frequency and topographic parameters on the primary waves are subsequently analyzed.Cross waves on double shoals constitute a type of topographically trapped wave whose solutions are formulated by combining the first and second types of the associated Legendre functions.The angular frequency is not only determined by the wavenumber but also influenced by the topographic parameters.Numerical experiments are conducted to investigate the generation mechanism of cross waves.The consistency between the numerical results and analytical solutions confirms the validity of the new analytical framework of cross waves on double shoals. 展开更多

The structure of loess is loose,and the shear strength of loess drops sharply after contact with water.Therefore,loess mudflows have become a common geological disaster on the Chinese Loess Plateau.In order to study the initiation mode and mechanism of loess mudflows,in this study,seven sets of flume experiments were designed by controlling the slope angle and rainfall intensity.The results show that(1)when the slope angle is between 10°and 20°,there are two initiation mechanisms of loess mudflows:mudflow(large scale)and retrogressive toe sliding,and mudflow(small-scale)and retrogressive toe sliding.(2)The main method by which water infiltrates into the soil accumulation is mainly vertical infiltration,which is not affected by the slope angle and the seepage direction of the accumulation soil.(3)The liquefaction of loess is the root cause of loess mudflows.Water infiltrates into the area with an uneven density and a large amount of water accumulates in this area.Thus,the water content of the loess increases and the pore water pressure increases quickly and cannot dissipate in time,so the loess liquefies and the liquefacted area continues to spread and become larger.Thus,loess mudflows(large scale)occur.The increase in pore water pressure was captured in the seven sets of experiments.However,the order of the rising positions in the accumulation were different.This requires us to carry out tracking of the particle displacement inside the soil and the spatial changes in the internal structure of the soil in future research. 展开更多

Sediment resuspension plays an important role in the transport and fate of heavy metals in the aquatic environment. In the present study, the release and binding forms of Cr, Cu, Zn, Pb under hydrodynamic conditions were investigated using an annular flume. Two sediments located at YLZ and GBD from Liangshui River, Beijing were resuspended for 10 hr at 0.159 and 0.267 m/see, respectively. The concentrations of suspended particulate matters of YLZ were higher than those of GBD during resuspension, indicating that the former sediment is more sensitive to the velocity. Cr in the dissolved phase stayed nearly constant at about 2.25 and 1.84 I^g/L for YLZ and GBD, respectively, due to the high percentage of its stable binding fractions in both sediments, while Cu, Zn, and Pb showed a fast release in the initial period of time. However, their concentrations in SPM generally decreased with time and were higher at the lower velocity of 0.159 m/see, which resulted from the entrainment and depressing effect of larger size particles with lower heavy metal content, commonly referred to as the "particle concentration effect". In addition, the binding form and heavy metal fractions were also found to vary during the resuspension event. A decrease in the sulphide/organic matters bounded form in GBD sediment was observed, whereas no visible changes were perceived in YLZ site samples. This phenomenon is due to the oxidation of heavy metal-sulphide binding forms, which originated from its high acid volatile sulphide content in GBD sediment. 展开更多

A wave flume simulator was used to study internal nitrogen release from the surface sediment collected from Taihu Lake, China. Particulate nitrogen concentrations were positively correlated with the concentrations of suspended solids, primarily from surface erosion related to the shear stress and duration of wave action. In response to 4 cm- and 10 cm-high wave production representing waves generated in Taihu Lake by gentle and gusty winds, respectively, the mean dynamic release rate of ammonium (NH4+) from the sediment to the overlying water was 1 × 10-3 mg/(m2.s) and the NH4+ concentration in the overlying water increased by 0.016 mg/L, indicating that waves resulting from strong wind can induce the rapid release of dissolved nitrogen from Taihu Lake sediments. The decrease in interstitial NH4+ concentrations at all sediment depths was associated with an increase in NH4+ concentrations in the overlying water by 0.01 mg/L, showing that sediment below the eroded layer was the main source of internal nitrogen release. Changes in the interstitial dissolved oxygen and NH4+ concentrations showed that wave-induced pore water movement can greatly increase the diffusion rate, and that these 15 cm. Autogenic processes are widely found in various sedimentary systems and they play an important role in the depositional evolution and corresponding sedimentary architecture.However,autogenic processes are often affected by changing allogenic factors and are difficult to be identified and analyzed from modern and ancient records.Through the flume tank experiment under constant boundary conditions,the depositional process,evolution principles,and the sedimentary architecture of a river-dominated delta was presented,and a corresponding sedimentary architecture model was constructed.The evolution of river-dominated delta controlled only by autogenic process is obviously periodic,and each autogenic cycle can be divided into an initial progradational stage,a middle retrogratational stage,and a late aggradational–progradational stage.In the initial progradational stage,one feeder channel incised into the delta plain,mouth bar(s)was formed in front of the channel mouth,and small-scale crevasse splays were formed on the delta plain.In the middle retrogradational stage,the feeder channel was blocked by the mouth bar(s)which grew out of water at the end of the initial stage,and a set of large-scale distributary splay complexes were formed on the delta plain.These distributary splay complexes were retrogradationally overlapped due to the continuous migration of the bifurcation point of the feeder channel.In the late aggradational–progradational stage,the feeder channel branched into several radial distributary channels,overlapped distributary channels were formed on the delta plain,and terminal lobe complexes were formed at the end of distributary channels.The three sedimentary layers formed in the three stages constituted an autogenic succession.The experimental delta consisted of six autogenic depositional successions.Dynamic allocation of accommodation space and the following adaptive sediments filling were the two main driving factors of the autogenic evolution of deltas. 展开更多

The erosion mechanisms of abandoned coastal section are understood detailedly by flume experiment, which play an important role to the offshore engineering facilities. A movable-bed physical model has been used to investigate the coastal erosion of an abandoned section of the Huanghe (Yellow) River Delta. The theory of physical scale models is discussed and a method for constructing the representative seabed section is developed. The results indicate that during the period initially after the abandonment of the delta the entire bed experienced rapid erosion because the seabed was steep and prone to liquefaction that resulted from storm wave action. After this initial period, a balance of erosion and accretion was established, and the beach profllc equilibrated with a point of balance present on the profile. The experimental results indicate that the volume of deposition was about half that of the erosion. Wave action may also induce significant stratal changes through its interaction with the soft seabed. The major morphological features developed in the model delta section were found to be qualitatively comparable with those observed in the prototype. A distorted modeling law that maintains the similarity of the modeled and prototype equilibrium beach profiles is proposed. Experimental results show that the distorted modeling is able to reproduce the beach-face slope in nature, and the model also successfully reproduced three historical evolutionary stages of erosion. 展开更多

A spatially adaptive (SA) two-dimensional (2-D) numerical wave flume is presented based on the quadtree mesh system,in which a new multiple particle level set (MPLS) method is proposed to solve the problem of interface tracking,in which common intersection may be traversed by multiple interfaces.By using the adaptive mesh technique and the MPLS method,mesh resolution is updated automatically with time according to flow characteristics in the modeling process with higher resolution around the free surface and the solid boundary and lower resolution in less important area.The model has good performance in saving computer memory and CPU time and is validated by computational examples of small amplitude wave,second-order Stokes wave and cnoidal wave.Computational results also indicate that standing wave and wave overtopping are also reasonably simulated by the model. 展开更多

This paper presents a lumped mass model to describe the run-out and velocity of a series of large flume tests,which was carried out to investigate some propagation mechanisms involved in rapid,dry,dense granular flows and energy transformation when the flows encountered obstacles and reoriented their movement directions.Comparisons between predicted and measured results show that the trend of predicted velocities was basically matched with that of measured ones.Careful scrutiny of test videos reveals that subsequent particles with a higher velocity collided with slowed fronts to make them accelerate. However,this simple model cannot reflect collisions between particles because it treated released materials as a rigid block.Thus,the predicted velocity was somewhat lower than the measured velocity in most cases.When the flow changed its direction due to the variation in slope inclination,the model predicted a decrease in velocity.The predicted decrease in velocity was less than the measured one within a reasonable range of 10% or less.For some cases in which a convexity was introduced,the model also predicted the same trend of velocities as measured in the tests.The velocity increased greatly after the materials took a ballistic trajectory from the vertex of the convexity,and reduced dramatically when they finally made contact with the base of the lower slope.The difference between prediced and measured decrease in velocity was estimated to be about 5% due to the landing.Therefore,the simple lumped mass model based on the energy approach could roughly predict the run-out and velocity of granular flows,although it neglected internal deformation,intergranular collision and friction. 展开更多

Tidal bore is a special and intensive form of flow movement induced by tidal effect in estuary areas, which has complex characteristics of profile, propagation and flow velocity. Although it has been widely studied for the generation mechanism, propagation features and influencing factors, the curved channel will complicate the characteristics of tidal bore propagation, which need further investigation compared with straight channel. In this study, the flume experiments for both undular and breaking bores’ propagation in curved channel are performed to measure the freesurface elevation and flow velocity by ultrasonic sensors and ADV respectively. The propagation characteristics,including tidal bore height, cross-section surface gradient, tidal bore propagation celerity, and flow velocity are obtained for both sides of the curved channel. And three bore intensities are set for each type of tidal bores. The freesurface gradients are consistently enlarged in high-curvature section for undular and breaking bores, but have distinct behaviors in low-curvature section. The spatial distributions of tidal bore propagation celerity and flow velocity are compared between concave and convex banks. This work will provide experimental reference for engineering design of beach and seawall protection, erosion reduction and siltation promotion in estuary areas with the existence of tidal bores. 展开更多

Experimental studies were conducted in a super-large wave flume,aiming at uncovering the hydrodynamic characteristics involved in the turbulent wave boundary layer of full scale environment.An explicit formula of boundary layer thickness on rough turbulent flow was presented based on the measured velocity data of the present study and collected experimental data on wave boundary layer.It was found that the bottom wave-associated nominal stresses under the conditions of prototype scale tests suppress the vertical turbulence scattering upward over the boundary layer,which accounts for thickening of the boundary layer under wave condition.Such effect has yet not been reported in the literatures using oscillatory U-tube or small-sized wave flume.The phase inconsistency in the turbulent boundary layer to the free stream velocity(velocity immediately outside the boundary layer)is within15°,which is remarkably smaller than the results from oscillatory U-tubes,as well as the larger wave flume experiment presented by Xie et al.(2021),showing that the coarser bed would further reduce the phase lead.The intensity of the vertical turbulent component is approximately 1/2 of the horizontal component,which has larger ratio compared with the value of 1/5 reported by previous studies.Especially,it was also found that the vertical turbulent energy was approximately 3/4 of the turbulent energy in spanwise directions(y-direction).This means that the turbulent fluctuation has similar order in all three-directions(x,y,z)in a full scale environment and highlights that the turbulent components in all the three directions should not be neglected when calculating the total turbulent energy. 展开更多

Fine grains migration is a primary cause of landslides and debris flows.This study investigates the effect of fine-grain migration on slope failure through flume experiments,focusing on the spatiotemporal characteristics and mechanisms of slope stability.A series of artificial rainfall flume experiments with varying rainfall intensities and slopes were conducted using soil samples collected from Wei Jia Gully.The experiments monitored pore-water pressure,grain migration,and failure sequences.Grain-size distribution parameters(μand Dc)were analyzed to understand the migration path and accumulation of fine grains.The experiments reveal that fine-grain migration significantly alters soil structure,leading to random blockage and interconnection of internal pore channels.These changes result in fluctuating pore-water pressure distributions and uneven fine-grain accumulation,critical factors in slope stability.Slope failures occur randomly and intermittently,influenced by fine-grain content in runoff and resulting pore-water pressure variations.This study highlights that fine-grain migration plays a vital role in slope stability,with significant implications for predicting and mitigating slope failures.The stochastic nature of fine-grain migration and its impact on soil properties should be incorporated into predictive models to enhance their accuracy and reliability. 展开更多
