Background:Bullying is a current social and educational problem with detrimental consequences in adolescence and later life stages.Previous research has explored the risk or protective factor at different socio-ecological levels, but further integration is needed to examine the relationships of family characteristics. This study examines how parenting style and attachment relate to adolescents’bullying and cyberbullying, and whether parental phubbing mediates these links. Methods:Grounded in social bonding theory,we surveyed a cross-sectional convenience sample of U.S.college students(N=545;Meanage=19.60,SD=1.41)who retrospectively reported middle/high-school experiences from Massachusetts,Colorado, and Virginia.Measures followed established traditions of bullying involvement, parenting style, and partner phubbing).Linear regressions tested associations among parenting style, attachment to parentseachers, parental phubbing, and bullying/cyberbullying offending and victimization. Results:Stronger parental attachment and democratic(authoritative)parenting were associated with lower bullying victimization, and teacher attachment was protective for offline and overall offending.Critically, parents’excessive personal technology use(phubbing)mediated the link between democratic parenting and bullying outcomes:high parental device use attenuated or nullified the protective association of democratic parenting. Conclusion:Findings reaffirm the value of nurturing,boundary-setting parenting and close parent–childeacher bonds, while highlighting a contemporary risk—parental device-related inattention.Despite rapid technological change, the core need for stable human connection remains central to reducing bullying involvement. 展开更多

This study investigated the effects of parental involvement, parenting stress, and social support on the social skills of school-aged children(6-18 years old)with intellectual disabilities(ID).Data were collected from 280 Chinese parents(mothers=70.0%,fathers=30.0%)of children with ID through purposive sampling and analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling(PLS-SEM).The results indicated that parental involvement not only directly enhanced children’s social skills but also indirectly improved them by alleviating parenting stress, which acted as a partial mediator.Contrary to the stress-buffering hypothesis, social support did not moderate the negative impact of parenting stress on social skills.Theoretically, this study contributes by validating ecological systems theory through a shift in focus from individual deficits to family systems, while also challenging the conventional view of stress-buffering theory.Accordingly,parent-support programs should integrate practical involvement training with systematic stress reduction and provide tailored assistance such as behavior-management training and respite care. 展开更多

Objectives:Pediatric allergic rhinitis(AR)is a highly prevalent chronic inflammatory airway disease that significantly impairs children’s sleep, learning performance, and quality of life.Despite standardized pharmacotherapy,long-term symptom control remains suboptimal, which is related to the poor treatment compliance of patients and the insufficient disease awareness of parents. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of parental cognitive enhancement combined with parent–child psychological support on symptom control, the quality of life, and underlying intervention mechanisms in children aged 6–14 years with moderate to severe AR.Methods:A total of 150 children aged 6–14 years with moderate to severe AR and their primary caregivers were enrolled and allocated to a study or a control group. The control group received routine home management for AR,and the study group received a combined intervention of parental cognitive enhancement and parent–child psychological support in addition to routine management.Total Nasal Symptom Score(TNSS),quality of life assessed by the Pediatric Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire(PRQLQ),and medication adherence assessed by the 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale were compared between the two groups before and after intervention.Evaluation was also conducted on the parental cognitive level, anxiety status assessed by the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS),and parent–child relationship assessed by the Child–Parent Relationship Scale were also evaluated. The bootstrap method was used to analyze the mediating effects of parental cognition and parent–child relationship. Results:After intervention, the study group showed significantly lower TNSS,PRQLQ scores in children, parental SAS scores, and parent–child conflict than the control group(all p<0.05)and significantly higher medication adherence, parental cognitive scores, and parent–child closeness(all p<0.05).Mediation analysis showed that the direct effect of study grouping on TNSS was not significant(p=0.512),whereas the indirect effects mediated through“parental cognitive level”and“parent–child relationship”were significant(95%confidence interval did not include 0),which indicates that the intervention effect was statistically mediated through these pathways. Conclusions:The combined intervention of parental cognitive enhancement and parent–child psychological support effectively improves clinical symptoms in children with moderate to severe AR,treatment adherence, and the quality of life. 展开更多

The time spent in sedentary behavior(SB)has increased in children and adolescents, which may be positively associated with less time spent in physical activity and with an increase in health problems.Considering that the family environment can contribute to healthy and unhealthy habits,it is not known whether parental physical activity levels could mitigate the parent-child association of SB.Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the parent-child association of SB according to parental physical activity level. The sample consisted of children/adolescents(n=182)aged between 6 and 17 years(mean±SD=[10.8±3.4]years)and their parents[161 mothers(mean±SD=[41.0±5.5]years)and 136 fathers(mean±SD=[43.6±5.8]years)].SB and physical activity were both measured with an accelerometer, and the parent-child association of SB was analyzed using Quantile Regression, adjusted by sex, age, socioeconomic status, and physical activity of the children/adolescents.An association of mother-child SB was observed in insufficiently active mothers(β=0.57;95%CI=0.38;0.75;p=0.001),but not among mothers who were physically active(β=0.42;95%CI=0.05,0.90;p=0.081).When considering the father-child association of SB,a significant association was observed only among insufficiently active fathers(β=0.24;95%CI=0.02,0.45;p=0.031),but not among fathers who were physically active(β=0.21;95%CI=0.16,0.40;p=0.403).These findings highlight the importance of encouraging PA in the family environment,in order to promote a reduction in SB and encourage physical activity engagement in the family environment. 展开更多

Background:While parenting is crucial for adolescents’academic adjustment, few studies have examined how parental autonomy support affects academic burnout or the underlying psychological processes. This study examined the sequential mediating roles of growth mindset and self-esteem in the association between parental autonomy support and academic burnout, using both variable-centered and person-centered approaches. Methods:A total of 1032 Chinese junior and senior high school students were recruited through cluster sampling.Using self-report questionnaires, participants were assessed on parental autonomy support, growth mindset,self-esteem,and academic burnout.Data were analyzed using mediation modeling and latent profile analysis. Results:The findings revealed a significant inverse association between parental autonomy support and adolescent academic burnout; Both growth mindset and self-esteem showed significant partial mediating associations.Furthermore, they formed a sequential mediating pathway linking parental autonomy support and academic burnout.Four distinct academic burnout profiles were identified:Low-Burnout,Moderate-Exhaustion,High-Exhaustion and Reduced Accomplishment, and Severe Burnout.Higher levels of parental autonomy support, growth mindset, and self-esteem were all significantly associated with a lower likelihood of belonging to higher burnout profiles, particularly the Severe Burnout profile.Among these factors,self-esteem exhibited the most consistent and robust associations across different burnout profile comparisons.Overall, the relationship between parental autonomy support and adolescent academic burnout can be explained through the interconnected psychological processes of growth mindset and self-esteem,with self-esteem serving as a particularly central pathway. Conclusions:Parental autonomy support, growth mindset, and self-esteem serve as interrelated protective factors against adolescent academic burnout. This study paves the way for developing differentiated and targeted strategies for adolescent academic burnout. 展开更多

Background:In adolescence, anxiety symptoms are a common mental health problem. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible chain-mediating functions of fundamental psychological needs satisfaction and self-compassion in the link between adolescent anxiety and parental psychological control. Methods:Convenience sampling was used to pick 8342 middle school pupils from the Chinese regions of Sichuan and Hebei for this cross-sectional study.Participants filled out validated measures of anxiety symptoms,self-compassion,fundamental psychological needs satisfaction, and parental psychological control. To test the suggested chain mediation model, data were examined using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling(using Mplus). Results:Anxiety symptoms were significantly predicted by parental psychological control(β=0.192,p<0.001).This link was significantly mediated by meeting basic psychological requirements(β=0.136,95%CI[0.116,0.156]),which accounted for 36.86%of the total effect.A significant chain mediation pathway was found(β=0.040,95%CI[0.025,0.055]),suggesting that parental psychological control increased anxiety by first undermining basic psychological needs, which in turn decreased self-compassion,even though self-compassion did not directly mediate the relationship. Conclusion:This study demonstrates that adolescent anxiety is directly predicted by parental psychological control and, more importantly, that this control is exerted through a major chain mediation pathway:by weakening basic psychological needs, which in turn diminishes self-compassion and exacerbates anxiety symptoms. 展开更多

In paediatric treatment, persistent wheeze in babies continues to pose significant challenges for identification and management. The forthcoming retrospective cohort study recently published in World Journal of Clinical Pediatrics, entitled"Understanding recurrent wheezing:A parent's Guide"by Kiatvitchukul et al offers essential insights by pinpointing independent factors linked to recurrence, such as age 12-24 months, preterm birth, allergic rhinitis, eosinophilia, and previous lower respiratory tract infections. The median time to recurrence of about 100 days is important since it shows that there is a good potential for quick treatment and comprehensive follow-up.This comment makes it clear how crucial it is to use this kind of proof in both community and clinical settings.By checking for clinical signs and chatting to their parents, you can find kids who are at high risk early on.This makes it easier to give them customized counselling, reduce their exposure to allergens, and start them on controller medicines when they need them. The study's results show that pediatricians, allergists, and carers need to work together to stop the same problems from happening again and cut down on hospital readmissions.By changing how they see the"100-day window"as an important time for monitoring and putting preventive measures into action, pediatricians can improve outcomes and give families more control over their child's respiratory health. We need more multicenter prospective research to learn more about the biological, environmental, and socioeconomic factors that lead to recurrence. This will help us turn these findings into standard approaches to care for people. 展开更多

Biparental incubation emerges from the balance between cooperation and conffllflict.Because only one parent can sit on the nest at a time, any environment-linked change in one parent's schedule compels a reallocation by the partner.Yet most ffiifield studies collapse incubation data to daily totals and rarely model continuous 24-h,sexspeciffiific rhythms, masking how environmental context reshapes between-parent dynamics. We used minuteresolution incubation records(13,632 nest-hours from 45 nests)to examine temporal and spatial variations in incubation by Kentish Plovers(Anarhynchus alexandrinus)breeding in northern Bohai Bay,China.By pairing daily summaries with cosinor-based models of sex-speciffiific hourly incubation,we revealed context-dependent diel timing shifts that coarser methods missed.Consistent with previous work,we found females dominated daytime incubation and males at night, yielding female-biased daily totals.Hourly analyses, however, revealed context-dependent retiming in our study. As season warmed, males increased midday attendance but delayed the onset of their night shift;while female attendance declined, producing a more even division between parents with male daily attendance remaining unchanged.Across habitats, total attendance was similar, but in rocky sites, where nocturnal predation was higher, males reallocated effort from night to day and exceeded females in daily totals.Increased male daytime involvement was accompanied by more frequent changeovers, which were more responsive to environmental context than daily attendance. These ffiifindings show that environmental variation primarily reorganises when parents incubate rather than simply how much they incubate, and that between-parent dynamics are best examined at hourly scales.Hourly sex-speciffiific analyses thus provide a clearer bridge between environmental context and parental decision-making—insights that matter for forecasting reproductive outcomes under warming climates and changing predator communities. 展开更多

In order to clarify the stabilization characteristics of cadmium(Cd)after different aging methods, soil culture tests of freeze-thaw,wetting-redrying cycles, and natural aging affecting on Cd phytotoxicity to rice were conducted.According to the national food safety standard GB2762-2022,the toxicity thresholds(RT)of Cd under different aging modes were derived. The results showed that:as the aging time increased to 360 days, the RT of different parent soils increased by 28.49%-204.86%(freeze-thaw),37.80%-192.55%(natural),34.45%-205.87%(wetting-redrying),compared with 14d’aging.Compared with natural aging:The RT of granite soil(SG),river sandy mud(SR),stucco field(SS)increased by 99.46%under freeze-thaw aging, decreased by 66.68%under wetting-redrying aging; The RT of purple sandy shale(SP),quaternary red clay soil(SQ)decreased by 20.32%under freeze-thaw aging, increased by 70.99%under wetting-redrying aging.RT of yellow mud soil(SY)showed a decreasing trend under unnatural aging. The prediction models of RT based on different parental characteristics under different aging methods were established:log10(AF360)=1.038AG-0.251Chaol-1.052,log10(AF360)=0.481pH+1.492CEC+1.223MW-6.375,log10(AF360)=0.119pH+0.264CEC+1.091AD+0.263.The regression coefficients of aging factors(AF360),which were 1.04,1.49,and 1.09 respectively, provided that water-stable aggregates(AG),cation exchange capacity(CEC),and the adhesive film(AD)were the primary controlling factors influencing RT with positive correlations. This study provided an important basis for evaluating different long-term aging modes affecting on soil Cd toxicity behavior and RT of Cd on rice. 展开更多

Insectivorous birds can play an important role in regulating arthropod populations in agroecosystems, including species considered agricultural pests. The Southern House Wren(Troglodytes musculus)is a common, cavitynesting insectivore that frequently uses nest boxes and may contribute to natural pest control. We studied parental feeding behavior in Southern House Wrens breeding in an agroecological cherry orchard in Buenos Aires Province,Argentina,to assess feeding rates and prey composition during the nestling period.Over two breeding seasons,276 h of video recordings were analyzed from nest boxes installed throughout the orchard.Additionally, fecal remains in nest boxes were collected from and examined under a stereoscopic magnifying glass to identify prey items that could not be detected through the camera recordings.Parents delivered an average of 15.58 feeding visits per hour, and 747 prey items were identiffiified. The most frequently delivered prey included Lepidoptera larvae(31.2%),Araneae(26.5%),Orthoptera(17.0%),Isopoda(8.3%),and adult Lepidoptera(8.2%).Feeding rates and prey size increased with brood size and nestling age. Some prey taxa(e.g.,Lepidoptera,Orthoptera,Isopoda,and Hemiptera identiffiified in fecal samples)are known to include important pest species in regional crops. Our results suggest that the Southern House Wrens may contribute to pest suppression in agroecological settings during the breeding season, and that promoting larger broods through appropriate nest box placement could enhance this service. This study highlights the potential of native insectivorous birds as allies in sustainable agriculture and provides novel behavioral data for a widespread species in South America. 展开更多

Background:The growing parenting stress among Chinese mothers in recent years raises concerns about its impact on adolescent internalizing problems. The purpose of this study was to examine the curvilinear relationship between maternal parenting stress and internalizing problems in adolescents, and further explore the moderating effects of family socioeconomic status(SES)and adolescent gender. Methods:Data were collected from 405 mothers and adolescents(203 boys,Meanage=12.23)across five cities(Beijing,Hebei,Shanxi,Shenzhen, and Shandong)in China, who completed self-report measures of maternal parenting stress and internalizing problems.Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analyses were conducted using SPSS 27.0.Results:Multiple regression analyses indicated that the association between maternal parenting stress2 and adolescents’internalizing problems was moderated by the interaction between gender and SES(b=−0.03,p<0.01).Specifically,a significant U-shaped relationship was observed among high-SES boys(b=0.12,t=3.89,p<0.001),with internalizing problems peaking at both low and high levels of maternal parenting stress, whereas the moderating effect of SES was not significant among girls. Conclusion:The study highlights that moderate maternal parenting stress is associated with lower internalizing problems among adolescents, particularly among high-SES boys, indicating that interventions should consider the optimal balance of parental stress and account for family socioeconomic and adolescent gender differences. 展开更多

Background:Parental overparenting is highly prevalent in current Chinese families, and its psychological influences on adolescent mental health are of great academic and practical concern. However, limited research has examined the potential curvilinear relationship between different dimensions of parental overparenting and adolescent internalizing problems,as well as the moderating roles of adolescent gender and age in these relationships. The purpose of this study was to examine the unique and potentially curvilinear effects of different dimensions of parental overparenting on adolescent internalizing problems in the context of contemporary Chinese families. Methods:Data were collected from 285 adolescents(147 male,Meanage=11.93)and their families across five cities in China at an initial assessment(Wave 1)and at a follow-up one year later(Wave 2).Hierarchical regression analyses were performed with SPSS 25.0 to examine the associations among the main variables. Results:The findings indicated that different dimensions of parental overparenting were differentially associated with adolescents’internalizing problems.Specifically, frequent comparisons of children’s achievements with peers positively and linearly predicted adolescents’internalizing problems at Wave 2(β=0.27,p<0.05).In addition, excessive affective involvement showed a U-shaped association with boys’internalizing problems(b=0.21,p<0.01),whereas excessive care exhibited a U-shaped association with adolescents’internalizing problems at Wave 2(b=0.19,p<0.05).Conclusions:These results suggest that different dimensions of overparenting impact adolescent development in various ways, highlighting the need for providing appropriate support and guidance without excessive control in family parenting practices. 展开更多

Background:Bullying victimization(BV)represents a critical public health concern among Chinese adolescents, with significant implications for psychological well-being.Although accumulating evidence underscores the detrimental association between maladaptive parenting practices and increased bullying victimization, the precise mediating mechanisms linking parental psychological control(PPC)to BV remain inadequately elucidated. This study addresses this gap by examining pathways through which PPC and deviant peer affiliation(DPA)jointly influence BV,while accounting for the protective role of self-compassion(SC).Methods:A sample of 861 Chinese adolescents(429 male;mean age=14.08 years,SD=1.07)recruited via a convenience sampling method completed validated self-report measures assessing PPC,DPA,SC,and BV frequency. Results:PPC is significantly associated with higher levels of BV(β=0.268,p<0.001).Crucially,structural equation modeling revealed that DPA partially mediated this relationship(β=0.043,p<0.01),indicating that PPC is positively associated with BV,and this association is mediated by DPA.Further moderation analyses identified SC as a buffering factor(β=-0.077,SE=0.038,p<0.05):Only adolescents with lower SC exhibited strengthened indirect effects of PPC on BV via DPA.This suggests SC mitigates the pathway from coercive parenting to risky peer associations. Conclusion:These findings contribute novel insights into multifaceted risk and protective factors for BV.PPC appears to function as a distal familial factor associated with adolescents’victimization experiences through peer-related processes, whereas SC emerges as an intrapersonal resilience-related factor. The study underscores the adverse consequences of psychologically controlling parenting and provides empirical support for targeted interventions. 展开更多

Background:This study aims to investigate the underlying mechanisms between parental marital conflict and adolescent short video dependence by constructing a chain mediation model, focusing on the mediating roles of experiential avoidance and emotional disturbance(anxiety, depression, and stress). Methods:Conducted in January 2025,the research recruited 4125 adolescents from multiple Chinese provinces through convenience sampling;after data cleaning,3957 valid participants(1959 males,1998 females)were included.Using a cross-sectional design, measures included parental marital conflict, experiential avoidance, anxiety, depression, stress, and short video dependence. Results:Pearson correlation analysis revealed significant positive correlations among all variables.Mediation analysis using the SPSS PROCESS macro showed that parental marital conflict directly predicted short video dependence(β=0.269,p<0.001),and also significantly predicted experiential avoidance(β=0.519,p<0.001),anxiety(β=0.072,p<0.001),depression(β=0.067,p<0.001),and stress(β=0.048,p<0.05).Experiential avoidance further predicted anxiety(β=0.521,p<0.001),depression(β=0.489,p<0.001),stress(β=0.408,p<0.001),and short video dependence(β=0.244,p<0.001).While both anxiety(β=0.050,p<0.05)and depression(β=0.116,p<0.001)positively predicted short video dependence, stress did not(β=0.019,p=0.257).Overall,experiential avoidance, anxiety, depression, and stress significantly mediated the relationship between parental marital conflict and short video dependence. Conclusion:These findings confirm that parental marital conflict not only directly influences adolescent short video dependence but also operates through a chain mediation pathway involving experiential avoidance and emotional disturbance, highlighting central psychological mechanisms and providing theoretical support for integrated mental health and behavioral interventions. 展开更多

There have been profound, ongoing changes during China’s modernization process in terms of family structure, intergenerational relations, and social ethics, which have resulted in a comprehensive reshaping of traditional filial piety—its premises, core values, and models. This study accordingly grounds itself in the Dual Filial Piety Model and uses it to examine how children’s filial piety affects the mental health of parents,as well as to investigate the underlying mechanisms. The results show that the authoritarian and reciprocal forms of filial piety differ significantly in their effects on the mental health of older parents;an authoritarian filial piety orientation has a negative impact that is especially evident among parents who are healthy or urban, while reciprocal filial piety shows no significant correlation with parental mental health overall but exerts adverse effects on rural parents. This study helps uncover the complex and context-dependent effects of the Dual Filial Piety Model on the mental health of parents. It highlights the ongoing tension in traditional filial piety between“continuity and transformation”for modern families and provides empirical support for the adaptive development of the filial piety culture in the new era,so as to ensure alignment with core contemporary requirements. 展开更多

Background:Childhood leukemia,a malignant proliferative disorder of the hematopoietic system and the most common childhood cancer, poses a significant threat to the lives and health of affected children. For parents,a leukemia diagnosis in their child is a profoundly traumatic event. As primary caregivers, they endure immense psychological distress and caregiving stress throughout the prolonged and demanding treatment process, which can adversely affect their own well-being and caregiving capacity. However, the psychological mechanisms, such as the role of mindfulness, linking caregiver stress to parental coping strategies remain underexplored, and evidence-based interventions to support these parents are needed. Methods:In Study 1,we administered a cross-sectional survey to 242 parents of children with leukemia who were hospitalized at the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University between January and August 2024.Participants completed measures assessing caregiver burden, mindful attention awareness, and parental coping style. In Study 2,we further evaluated the effects of a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction(MBSR)intervention. Results:The results of Study 1 revealed:(1)The caregiving stress significantly and negatively predicted coping style(β=−1.18,95%CI[−2.18,−0.18],p<0.01).(2)Caregiving stress also significantly and negatively predicted mindfulness(β=−1.90,95%CI[−2.43,−1.38],p<0.01).(3)Conversely,mindfulness significantly and positively predicted coping style(β=0.85,95%CI[0.62,1.07],p<0.01).These findings suggest that mindfulness mediates the relationship between caregiver burden and coping style. In Study 2,the experimental group showed a significant decrease in caregiver stress post-intervention(t=2.24,p<0.05),a significant increase in mindfulness(t=−4.61,p<0.001),and a significant improvement in coping style(t=−2.36,p<0.01).No significant changes were observed in the control group. Conclusion:MBSR can effectively enhance mindfulness and promote adaptive coping strategies, while reducing caregiver burden among parents of children with leukemia. 展开更多

BACKGROUND There is a possible link between depression and anxiety about suicidal ideation among parents of children with congenital heart disease(CHD).AIM To document the effects of depression and anxiety on parental suicidal ideation among children with CHD and the associated factors.METHODS This was a cross-sectional study among 50 parents of children with CHD who attended the Cardiac Clinic of University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Ituku-Ozalla.Information was obtained using the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale.RESULTS A greater percentage of parents whose child had a heart defect had anxiety symptoms(50.0%)than did those whose child had no heart defect(24.0%),and the difference in proportions was statistically significant(χ2=7.250,P=0.007).A greater percentage of parents whose child had a heart defect had suicidal ideation(28.0%)than did those whose child had no heart defect(8.0%),and the difference in proportions was statistically significant(χ2=6.775 P=0.009).A positive correlation was elicited between anxiety and suicide ideation, and this correlation was statistically significant(r=0.748,P<0.001).A positive correlation was elicited between depression and suicidal ideation scores, and this was statistically significant(r=0.617,P<0.001).CONCLUSION There is strong interconnectivity between anxiety and depression with suicidal ideation. There is an urgent need to start screening for the mental health of parents of children with CHD to avert the high propensity of complete suicide. In addition, policy makers may introduce a national clinical practice guideline on the importance of psychotherapy and mental health screening and targeted interventions for parents of children with CHD. 展开更多
