Results show that clay mineral types in various sedimentary environments have different sediment sources and transport routes. Sediments in the northern SCS (north of 20°N) between the southwest of Taiwan Island and the outer mouth of the Pearl River have high contents of illite and chlorite, which are derived mainly from sediments on Taiwan Island and/or the Yangtze River. Sediments from the Pearl River are characterized by high kaolinite and low smectite content, and most are distributed in the area between the mouth of the Pearl River and northeast of Hainan Island and transported vertically from the continental shelf to the slope. Characterized by high illite content, sediments from Kalimantan Island are transported toward the Nansha Trough. Sediments from Luzon Island are related with volcanic materials, and are transported westwards according to smectite distribution. On the Sunda Shelf, sediments from the Mekong River are transported southeast in the north while sediments from the Indonesian islands are transported northward in the south. Ascertaining surface sediment sources and their transport routes will not only improve understanding of modem transportation and depositional processes, but also aid paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic analysis of the SCS.展开更多

The Yellow Sea continental shelf receives large quantities of sediment from the Huanghe (Yellow) River. Unfortunately, little attention has been yet paid to the sedimentation on the shallow shelf and its features, and the vertical sediment flux in the area is poorly understood. In this study, nine cores were collected in northern Yellow Sea by the R/V Science 1 in September, 1998 and 1999 to examine the sedimentation rate, sediment flux and the provenance with ^210Pb analysis. The 2^210Pb activity profiles showed that the vertical sediment flux ranged from 0.06 to 1.18 g/cm^2·a in the region. In central part of the area, there was a patch of fine-grained mud, with the flux below 0.33 g/cm^2·a. Most profiles were featured in two-segment model. Differences in the profiles reflected spatial and temporal variations in hydrodynamic and sedimentary processes. In order to determine the provenance and sedimentary setting in the area, the geochemistry of Ca, Fe, Sr, Cu, Ti and Rb in 11 surficial sediment samples were studied, which showed that in the central northern Yellow Sea, the mud deposit was from multi-source but mainly from the Huanghe River.展开更多

The results indicate that the surface sediments in the study area are primarily composed of the silt-sized components similar to the Huanghe River. The total concentration of aluminum varies from 5.57% to7.37%(average(6.33 ± 0.40)%), and its spatial distribution is mainly controlled by the grain size. Correlations between the ratio of aluminum to titanium concentration and aluminum concentration, titanium concentration and the mean grain size indicate that aluminum in the near shore surface sediments is affected majorly by the terrigenous source, and partially by the anthropogenic source. The ratios of aluminum to titanium concentrations are larger than the background value of loess matter at some stations due to the existence of excess aluminum associated with human activities. Thus, the sources of aluminum should be identified firstly when aluminum is used as an index of terrigenous matter even in the near shore area dominated by terrigenous deposits.展开更多

While previous research has primarily focused on large river delta coasts, the responses of the widely distributed small bays dominated by ocean dynamics, has received comparatively less attention. To address this gap, this study examines the Weihai Bay, located in the northeast of Shandong Peninsula,China. By integrating total organic carbon isotope tracers(δ13C and C/N) with sediment transport modeling, we systematically analyze the spatiotemporal patterns of surface sediment grain size inside and outside the bay, along with their responses to natural and human-induced drivers. Our findings reveal that the sedimentary environment of Weihai Bay is governed by the combined effects of tidal currents, ocean currents, wave activity, and sediment supply. Tidal dynamics dominate the hydrodynamic conditions within the bay, while ocean currents predominate offshore. Surface sediments in the bay are primarily composed of silt, originating from sediments carried by the Yellow Sea Warm Current. These sediments enter the bay through the southern bay mouth under tidal forcing, are redistributed counterclockwise by residual tidal currents, and eventually exit via the northern bay mouth. Coarser sediments in specific areas are primarily controlled by strong wave action and terrestrial inputs. Between 1988 and 2023, Weihai Bay sediments have undergone a noticeable coarsening trend, primarily driven by anthropogenic modifications to sediment supply and hydrodynamic regimes. Coastal reclamation, shoreline modification, and infrastructure development have intensified coarse-grained terrestrial sediment input. Concurrently, shoreline advancement has reduced wave dissipation, enhancing nearshore hydrodynamics and accelerating sediment coarsening. This study highlights the sensitivity of small bay sedimentary environments to anthropogenic forcing, advancing our understanding of the coupled human-marine sediment system and providing a scientific basis for coastal sediment evolution under the dual influences of climate change and human activity.展开更多

In the present paper, clay minerals of surface sediments throughout the eastern part of Beibu Gulf has been investigated to reveal sources and transport of detrital fine- grained sediments. Four distinct clay mineral suites were observed from cluster analysis of clay mineral compositions of the samples. From the distribution pattern of clay minerals, we conclude that kaolinte in the eastern gulf is mainly derived from South China Landmass; Smectite could not be transported mainly by surface current from north-western Hainan Island, and maybe minor portion of it from Red River; Illite is mainly transported by the currents fl'om South China Sea. Chlorite has two sources, namely South China Sea and South China Landmass. The Zhujiang River derived sediments could not be one of the sources for the clay mineral here, because of very different composition and ratios. The distribution pattern of clay minerals in the eastern Beibu Gulf is mainly controlled by fine-grained sediment source and local currents. The Silt/Clay, Smectite/Kaolinte, and Smetite/(Chlorite+Illite) ratios could be used as indicators of fine-grained sediment dispersal in the gulf.展开更多

The sedimentation rates in the Okinawa Trough roughly range from 11 to 39cm/ka, and the average is 23.0cm/ka. China's continental matter is the main sediment source of the middle Okinawa Trough and has important contribution to the northern and southern Okinawa Trough. The sedimentation rates during the marine oxygen isotope (MIS) 2 are uniformly higher than those during MIS 1 in the northern and middle Okinawa Trough while they are on the contrary in the southern Okinawa Trough. Sedimentation rates in the Okinawa Trough can be one of the proxies of sediment source and an indicator of cooling events.展开更多

Its formation and evolution are of interest for scientists of various fields; however, the sediment provenance is uncertain. In this study, rare earth element(REE) geochemical compositions of the RSR sediments together with their potential sources are investigated to identify the provenance of the RSR sediments. The typical parameters((La/Yb)_N,(La/Sm)_N and(Gd/Yb)_N) as well as the upper continental crust-normalized patterns of REEs can only be associated with source rocks, and thus can be used as effective tracers for the origin and sources of sediments. However, the REE contents of sediments are affected by many factors, such as particle sorting and chemical weathering. Onshore RSR sediments are different in REE geochemical composition from offshore RSR sediments to some extent, suggesting that not all of the offshore RSR sediments have the same sources as the onshore RSR sediments. Meanwhile, the sediments adjacent to the northeast of Cheju Island and at Lian Island near the Lianyun Harbour were not the source of the RSR sediments due to their distinctive REE patterns, dEu,(La/Yb)_N,(Gd/Yb)_N and(La/Sm)_N. The Korean river sediments could be dispersed to the Jiangsu Coast slightly impacting the fine fractions of the RSR sediments, particularly the offshore RSR sediments. Additionally, geochemical comparisons show that the modern Yellow River was responsible for the onshore RSR sediments, whereas the sediment loads from the Yangtze River could serve as a major contributor to the RSR, particularly the offshore RSR. In addition, the offshore RSR could also be partly fed by an unknown source due to some high values of(La/Yb)_N,(La/Sm)_N and La contents differing from those of the Chinese and Korean river sediments.展开更多

The distribution characteristics of Radiolaria fossils in the surface sediments are as follows: (1) From the shelf of shallow water to the upper of continental slope, there are a few Radiolaria fossils and monotonous genus and species; (2) In the lower of continental slope, Radiolaria fossils are poor in the volcanic cinders and turbidite; (3) The abundance and diversity of Radiolaria fossils are high in clay of the basin. The dominant species of Radiolaria is Spongotrochus glacialis on the continental shelf. Current, topography, water depth, and temperature etc. are key factors influencing Radiolaria distribution. The sources of sediments mainly are terrigenous, biogenic and volcanic sediments in the survey area and they are mostly from the Kamchatka peninsula in the east of Russia and the Aleutian Islands.展开更多

摘要Accurate identification of sediment sources and erosion hotspots is crucial for implementing targeted soil and water conservation measures. This study analyzed the temporal dynamics of sediment source contributions during seven rainfall events(A1–A7)that generated both runoff and suspended sediment at the outlet of the Hantaichuan watershed, located in the wind–water erosion crisscross region of the northern Loess Plateau,China.A total of 82 suspended sediment samples were collected at the Xiangshawan hydrological station during 2021 and 2022.Additionally,145 soil samples were collected from three primary potential sources:sandy soil, loess soil, and Pisha sandstone.Mid-infrared(MIR)spectroscopy and geochemical fingerprinting were used to trace and quantify sediment sources. For MIRbased source apportionment, twelve predictive models were developed using partial least squares regression(PLSR)and support vector machine regression(SVMR)in combination with six spectral preprocessing techniques. The PLSR model with first-derivative Savitzky–Golay(SGD1)preprocessing achieved the best performance.Source apportionment results indicated that Pisha sandstone was the dominant sediment source(44.00%–72.23%),followed by sandy soil(14.23%–37.00%)and loess soil(10.01%–24.00%).Among the analyzed rainfall events, the contribution of Pisha sandstone was lowest in the small flow magnitude event A3(57.53%)and highest in the large flow magnitude event A6(63.48%),suggesting that sediment source composition was strongly controlled by rainfall event magnitude. Both MIR spectroscopic and geochemical fingerprinting methods showed high consistency, confirming MIR spectroscopy as a reliable,non-destructive,and cost-effective alternative for rapid sediment source apportionment and for supporting erosion control prioritization in highly erodible catchments.

摘要Clay minerals of surface sediments in the South China Sea (SCS) are analyzed with X-ray diffraction, and their transport is explored with a grain size trend analysis (GSTA) model. Ascertaining surface sediment sources and their transport routes will not only improve understanding of modem transportation and depositional processes, but also aid paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic analysis of the SCS.

摘要Soil erosion is a major issue in Loess Plateau,China, and quantitative analyses of sediment sources are crucial for soil erosion control. In this study,a combination of flood couplet analysis and composite fingerprint identification was used for historical reconstructions of soil erosion in sediment source areas in Loess Plateau. Each flood couplet was constructed based on sediment 137Cs activity, and past soil erosion was calculated using soil bulk density and storage capacity curves. The contribution rates of the sediment sources were calculated using the fingerprinting method, and the amount of erosion in the sediment source areas was estimated. The best fingerprint combination(Cr,Ni,V,and TOC)enabled a 97.2%recognition of sediment sources from 29 flood events(1956–1990)in the Loess Plateau. The contribution rates of gullies, farmland, grassland, and shrubland were 44.89%,26.38%,10.49%,and 18.24%,respectively.These four land use types contributed 1,227,751,512,and 279 tons of sediments,respectively.Re-vegetation decreased soil erosion(1966–1983),whereas deforestation increased soil erosion(1956–1965 and 1984–1990).Rational soil and water conservation measures on slopes and check dam construction in gullies are therefore suggested to mitigate erosion.

摘要Sedimentation of fine-grained deposits on coastal zones and continental shelves are important because of the association with chemical pollutants, and the implication to the impact on biological processes, the stratigraphic correlations, and changes in sedimentary environments. In order to determine the provenance and sedimentary setting in the area, the geochemistry of Ca, Fe, Sr, Cu, Ti and Rb in 11 surficial sediment samples were studied, which showed that in the central northern Yellow Sea, the mud deposit was from multi-source but mainly from the Huanghe River.

摘要The growth of tidal flats off Zhejiang coasts in southwestern China has provided substantial areas for local agriculture and construction activities. To evaluate modern and future development of tidal flats in the region,a good understanding of sediment sources is necessary.Previous research has concluded that the Changjiang(Yangtze)River is the dominant supplier of sediments to this part of the southeast Chinese coast, despite the fact that sediment delivery from this source has been decreased markedly in the past two decades. In this study,we investigated the sources of tidal flat sediments, and the magnetic and geochemical properties of recent tidal flat sediments along the Zhejiang coast were compared with those discharged from rivers.Magnetic and geochemical properties of the tidal flat samples reveal statistically distinct sediment provenance groups. The magnetic and geochemical scatter plots show that the suspended sediment samples are naturally divided into two different groups, one including the Changjiang River and Qiantang River material, and the other including the Jiaojiang,Oujiang, and Feiyun Rivers that located in the central and southern parts of the study areas. At last,a binary source of tidal flat sediments along the Zhejiang coast was determined, with the substantial majority originating from local rivers, while a much smaller proportion emanates from the Changjiang River to the north. We conclude that the sediment contribution of the Changjiang River to tidal flat development in the region has been markedly overestimated, with important implications for management.

摘要The clay mineralogy of 28 sandy-muddy transitional beach(SMT-Beach)sediments and surrounding mountain river sediments along the coasts of southeastern China was systematically investigated to reveal the sediment source-to-sink process variations of such beaches and their morphological indications. The results show that the clay mineral assemblages of these SMT-Beaches mainly comprise of almost equal illite(~30%),kaolinite(~28%),chlorite(~22%),and smectite(~20%)contents.From the surrounding mountain rivers to the SMT-Beaches,clay mineral assemblages show distinct spatial changes characterized by a large decrease(~40%)in kaolinite, whereas the other three clay minerals present relative increases, especially clear for smectite. The muddy sediment sources of SMT-Beaches inferred from the clay mineralogy are mainly derived from nearby mountain rivers coupled with long-distance transport and penetration of the Changjiang River. The sandy sediments of these beaches are predominantly sourced from nearby mountain rivers, the weathering products of surrounding rocks in both mainland and island environments, and erosion of the“Old Red Sand”and“Red Soil Platform”.However, the sandy sediment sources of the SMT-Beaches are largely reduced because of the remarkable decrease in the river fluvial supply associated with intensive human activities such as dam construction and coastal reclamation.Subsequently, the sandy sections of SMT-Beaches present clear erosion and have revealed by both time series remote sensing images and a compilation of published literature. In contrast, the muddy sediment supply of SMT-Beaches is temporarily stable and relatively constant, resulting in the landward migration of the mudflats with relative transgression or accumulation. These findings highlight that the natural evolution processes of SMT-Beaches have been greatly reshaped by intensive human activities.

摘要Surface sediment samples in the near shore area of the north Shandong Peninsula are collected for grain size and element analyses. Thus, the sources of aluminum should be identified firstly when aluminum is used as an index of terrigenous matter even in the near shore area dominated by terrigenous deposits.

摘要Under the background of global climate change, anthropogenic processes have profoundly altered the sources and transport mechanisms of coastal sediments. This study highlights the sensitivity of small bay sedimentary environments to anthropogenic forcing, advancing our understanding of the coupled human-marine sediment system and providing a scientific basis for coastal sediment evolution under the dual influences of climate change and human activity.
摘要-Suspended matters are important carriers of heavy metals in the hydrocycle. In this paper, the field investigation , lab. experiment and 'corresponding analysis' were made to study sources of the heavy metals and the transfer of suspended matters from the Hangzhou Bay.This conclusion shows that the contents of heavy metals in this area are the natural background values ; the distributions of heavy metals are controlled by the plume front.

摘要Clay minerology of sediments are useful in determining distribution, sources and dispersal routes of fine-grained sediments. The Silt/Clay, Smectite/Kaolinte, and Smetite/(Chlorite+Illite) ratios could be used as indicators of fine-grained sediment dispersal in the gulf.

摘要On the basis of accelerator mass spectrometer radiocarbon (AMS ^14C) dating, sedimentation rates of 11 cores collected from the northern to southern Okinawa Trough are discussed. Sedimentation rates in the Okinawa Trough can be one of the proxies of sediment source and an indicator of cooling events.

摘要Natural radionuclides are powerful tools for understanding the sources and fate of suspended particulate matter(SPM).Particulate matter with different particle sizes behaves differently with respect to adsorption and desorption. We analyzed the activi-ties and distribution characteristics of multiple natural radionuclides(238U,226Ra,40K,228Ra,7Be and 210Pbex)on size-fractionated SPM at the Lijin Hydrographic Station(Huanghe or Yellow River)every month over a one-year period. Results showed that medium silt(16–32µm)was the main component. As expected, the activity of each radionuclide decreased with an increase of particle size.We examined the sources of SPM with different particle sizes using activity ratios of 226Ra/238U,228Ra/226Ra,40K/238U and 7Be/210Pbex,and concluded that SPM with different particle sizes originated from different sources. Our results indicate that fine SPM(32µm)was mainly derived from resuspension of riverbed sediment.During high runoff periods, the concentration of SPM increased significantly, and the pro-portion of fine particles originating upstream increased.Naturally occurring radioactive isotopes, especially on size-fractionated par-ticles,are therefore seen as useful tracers to understand the sources and behaviors of riverine particles transported from land to sea.

摘要The Kongsfjorden is highly sensitive region to climate variability, however, the study of gamma-ray radionuclides in related areas is relatively scarce. In this study, the grain size, total organic carbon(TOC),13 Corg isotopes, and specific activities of seven gamma nuclides were analysed in surface sediments of the Kongsfjorden in the Arctic during the summer of 2017.The specific activities of 210 Pbex,137 Cs,238 U,226 Ra,228 Ra,228 Th,and 40 K were 12–256 Bq/kg,0–3.8 Bq/kg,25–42 Bq/kg,24–38 Bq/kg,22–40 Bq/kg,22–40 Bq/kg,and 354–738 Bq/kg,respectively,with average values of(121±94)Bq/kg,(2.0±1.2)Bq/kg,(34±6)Bq/kg,(32±4)Bq/kg,(32±6)Bq/kg,(33±6)Bq/kg,and(611±119)Bq/kg.This study observed a significant positive correlation(r=0.845,p<0.05)between TOC and 210 Pbex, highlighting the strong influence of organic matter on the distribution of 210 Pbex. The boundary scavenging of210 Pb from the open sea contributed 27.5%–46.2%to the total 210 Pbex in the sediments of the outer Kongsfjorden. The grain size was an important factor affecting the activity distribution of several radionuclides(238 U,228 Ra,228 Th,226 Ra,and 40 K).The specific activity of 137 Cs indicated the transport of terrestrial materials from the exposed area of the Kongsfjorden. The sediments in the Kongsfjorden were derived from various material contributions of glacial meltwater debris, glacial rivers, bare soil, atmospheric deposition, and marine sources. This study explains the source of the Kongsfjorden sediment and the distribution characteristics of radionuclides, and illustrateas the main factors affecting the distribution of radionuclides, which provides a reference for the behavior of polar radionuclides in future research.
摘要This is the first to elucidate the distribution and sources of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/PCDFs),and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls in the waters from Kanzaki River, which is one of the most heavily polluted rivers in Japan. The World Health Organization (WHO)-toxic equivalent quantities (TEQs) in waters from the mainstream exceeded the Japanese environmental standard (1.0 pg-TEQ/L).The PCDD/PCDFs were dominated by highly chlorinated DFs,which predominantly contributed to the WHO-TEQs,suggesting that the main causes would be the incineration-related wastes. To find the sources, the dioxin congener concentrations in water and sediment samples from its tributary small waterways were determined.Abnormally high WHO-TEQs were detected in a water (50 pg-TEQ/L) and a sediment sample (41,000 ng-TEQ/kg dry weight) near the industrial solid waste incinerators (ISWIs).The PCDD/PCDF characteristics agreed well with those of the incinerator-related wastes as seen in the mainstream. These facts indicate that the dioxin pollution in the mainstream could be largely related to the industrial wastes from the ISWIs.Here,a TEQ apportionment method was used to understand the contribution of the pyrogenic sources to the WHO-TEQs.The average contribution ratios of the pyrogenic sources to WHO-TEQs were more than 80% for river waters from the mainstream, indicating that the elevated WHO-TEQs in the mainstream had been largely caused by the ISWIs.

摘要The Jianggang Harbour-centered radial sand ridge(RSR) is the largest sand body in the Yellow Sea. In addition, the offshore RSR could also be partly fed by an unknown source due to some high values of(La/Yb)_N,(La/Sm)_N and La contents differing from those of the Chinese and Korean river sediments.

摘要A quantitative assessment of sediment sources is crucial for understanding soil erosion trends and enhancing soil erosion prevention and control measures. The environmental elements, such as vegeta-tion,land use,and rainfall, etc.,of the Chinese Loess Plateau(CLP)changed significantly after the implementation of"Grain for Green"(GFG)project. However, the response of sediment sources to the environmental changes in different periods remains unclear. In this study, sediment yields and sources were investigated by using the composite fingerprinting method.Forty flood couplets and their sediment yields corresponding to the 20-year period after the GFG project were established in Shagouba water-shed,Shaanxi Province,China. Results showed that the thicker flood couplets, the higher percentage of silt and clay particles.Following the GFG project, the cumulative sediment yields during the first period(2000-2010)was 91,760 t,and in the second period(2011-2019)was 77,940 t.The sediment contri-butions changed from the first period that gully(48.73%)>shrub sandy land(28.82%)>sloping farmland(12.06%)>forestland and grassland(8.58%)>road(1.81%),to the second period that gully(47.33%)>shrub sandy land(26.40%)>forestland and grassland(10.27%)>road(9.02%)>sloping farmland(6.98%).The gully always contributes the most sediment, thus implementing measures such as safeguarding gully heads and constructing bio-valley mills in channels were recommended to mitigate gully erosion. This study provides a scientific basis for evaluating the effects of the GFG project on the CLP,and theoretical support for the scientific management of small watersheds.

摘要The transport of suspended particulate matter is a crucial aspect of studies on sediment source-to-sink processes. However, research on its transport patterns in high-erosion areas of low-latitude seas remains limited. To elucidate modern land-sea interaction processes controlled by the monsoon climate, this study investigates the seasonal transport patterns and control mechanisms of suspended particulate matter in the western Sunda Shelf. Results reveal significant seasonal variations in the spatial distribution of suspended particulate matter concentrations, with elevated levels observed during autumn compared with spring. These differences are directly attributed to the East Asian monsoon, including seasonal monsoon precipitation and the associated transport dynamics.During the northeast monsoon, the Malay Peninsula serves as a primary source for the western sea area, with terrestrial materials from its rivers transported to the northern Gulf of Thailand. This transport pattern shifts to an S-shaped,clockwise circulation during upwelling events.Conversely,in the southwest monsoon, rivers in the northern Gulf of Thailand become the predominant sources for the Sunda Shelf, with terrestrial materials carried by clockwise currents toward the eastern Malay Peninsula. When upwelling occurs off the southern Indochina Peninsula, one branch heads toward the South China Sea and the other toward the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. The seasonal variation in material sources is further supported by the distribution of clay minerals and the discrimination results of rare earth element proxies,including(La/Sm)UCC-(Gd/Yb)UCCand(La/Yb)UCC-(Gd/Yb)UCC,in surface sediments from the Sunda Shelf and surrounding marine areas.

摘要Fingerprinting generates reliable sediment provenance information which supports devising policy or practical strategies for soil conservation and sediment management, but it remains challenging in areas with fragmented landscapes and diverse land use practices. This study evaluated the seasonality of biomarker signatures and their variability among particle size fractions, and apportioned target time-integrated suspended sediment to land use-based sources in an intensive agricultural watershed with mosaic land use patch configurations and crop-specific farming practices.Source materials(i.e.,topsoil)from dry croplands, paddy fields and citrus orchards were sampled, and target time-integrated sus-pended sediment samples were collected at the watershed outlet. The content and compound-specific δ13C of long-chain saturated n-alkanes(C23-C33)were determined for two particle size fractions(i.e.,<25 μm,25-63 μm).The δ13C of monomeric n-alkanes displayed insignificant variabilities between particle size fractions and temporal variability across the sampling period. The MixSIAR Bayesian model was employed to quantify sediment source contributions.Due to land disturbance by tillage and crop plantation, our results revealed that paddy fields act as an important temporary secondary sediment source despite such fields conventionally being recognized as sediment sinks.Regardless, dry farmland remains the largest contributor to watershed sediment loss.A range of measures such as soil virgin-ization,returning straw to fields, and pasture cultures in orchards are recommended for precision sediment management at watershed scale.
摘要Totally 2472 grains of Radiolaria belonging to 36 Genera and 45 species are distinguished from 12 surface sediments in the Bering Sea. The sources of sediments mainly are terrigenous, biogenic and volcanic sediments in the survey area and they are mostly from the Kamchatka peninsula in the east of Russia and the Aleutian Islands.

摘要In this paper we introduce HOTSED,a novel, innovative GIS-based model designed for assessing potential hotspots of sediment dynamics at watershed scale.HOTSED integrates geomorphic spatial information with both structural and functional properties of connectivity.HOTSED provides a single and intuitive output that depicts the location of sediment source hotspots. Moreover,it enables the identification of“relative hazard”classes for sediment production and related effects. The general methodological framework is based on the initial elaboration of an Inventory Map(IM)of sediment-related landforms and processes, along with the implementation of a corresponding database.Subsequently,we used data stored in the IM to estimate the geomorphic Potential of Sediment Sources(PSS)through a relative scoring system.Furthermore,we computed Structural Sediment Connectivity(STC)and the Potential for Sediment Transport(PST)by combining terrain and hydrological parameters, vegetation roughness, and rainfall erosivity.Afterwards,PSS,STC,and PST components are integrated through a raster-based calculation method yielding the HOTSED model. We tested the HOTSED procedure in the upper Val d’Arda-Mignano watershed, which is a representative geomorphologically highly active Mediterranean area of the Northern Apennines(Italy).Through photointerpretation, terrain analysis, and fieldwork,we mapped sedimentrelated geomorphic features for a total of 4640 ha including:badlands and gullies(0.26%),rill-interrill erosion(15.03%),fluvial erosion(0.03%),landslides(70.06%),litho-structural erosional systems(0.87%),slope deposits(12.56%),and alluvial deposits(1.19%).HOTSED revealed hotspots with a very high hazard potential located near main channels or upstream of the reservoir. These areas are often linked with active landslides highly connected to the drainage system and frequently associated with other processes like bank erosion or surficial soil erosion. The model also highlighted linear hotspots corresponding to drainages flowing alongside or intersecting complex geomorphic systems such as landslides.Furthermore,HOTSED identified areas where sediments are stored in depositional landforms, exhibiting a low hazard potential, considering both low geomorphic potential and sediment connectivity. Our conceptual model is generally applicable but proves to be particularly effective in areas characterized by complex and polygenetic geomorphic systems, such as the Northern Apennines.HOTSED offers a valuable tool for watershed authorities to support sustainable watershed and reservoir management.
