To reveal the influence of coupled effects of dry-wet cycling and precompression stress(CEDWCPS)on the damage evolution of limestone with horizontal fissure(LHF),a series of degradation and uniaxial compression tests were conducted, and a corresponding piecewise damage constitutive model(PDCM)was established. We found that both dry-wet cycling and precompression stress deteriorate the physical properties, alter the microscopic characteristics, and reduce the mechanical properties of the LHF.These degradations are particularly pronounced under the CEDWCPS,although the magnitude of these changes gradually diminishes with the progression of dry-wet cycling.Meanwhile, they also reduce the deformation degree, prolong the micropore compaction stage, shorten the unstable crack propagation stage, lower the frequency and intensity of AE events, decrease the high-amplitude and high-frequency AE signals, enlarge crack scales, and shorten the crack initiation time.Among the changes of these indicators, the dry-wet cycling plays a dominant role. The crack types of LHF under the CEDWCPS(LHFCEDWCPS)are predominantly tensile cracks, supplemented by shear cracks. The failure mode can be defined as tensileshear composite failure. Finally, the established PDCM effectively captures the nonlinear deformation of micropore and the linear deformation of the matrix in LHFCEDWCPS,with all corresponding R2 consistently exceeding 0.97. 展开更多

Track slab concrete(TSC)and filling layer self-compacting concrete(FLSCC)are the key materials used in the China Railway Track System(CRTS)III slab ballastless track.Understanding the dynamic damage evolution of TSC and FLSCC under load is essential for assessing the stability and safety of the slab tracks. In this study, the damage characteristics of TSC and FLSCC were investigated under uniaxial compression based on the acoustic emission(AE)technique. The results showed that the AE events occurred in the failure process and were the most significant during the yielding stage. The AE analysis revealed that the damage of TSC and FLSCC specimens was predominantly tensile cracks, accounting for 70.33%−83.07%.When the b-value was less than 1.0 and a large amount of energy was released,it indicated the presence of large cracks.Based on the Weibull random distribution and the statistical damage constitutive model, the correlation between damage variables and AE parameters was analyzed. This study indicates that the AE technique is effective for monitoring damage evolution in the concrete materials of CRTS III slab tracks. 展开更多

This investigation utilizes non-equilibrium molecular dynamics(NEMD)simulations to explore shockinduced spallation in single-crystal tantalumacross shock velocities of 0.75–4 km/s and initial temperatures from300 to 2000 K.Two spallation modes emerge:classical spallation for shock velocity below 1.5 km/s,with solid-state reversible Body-Centered Cubic(BCC)to Face-Centered Cubic(FCC)orHexagonal Close-Packed(HCP)phase transformations and discrete void nucleation-coalescence;micro-spallation for shock velocity above 3.0 km/s,featuring complete shock-induced melting and fragmentation, with a transitional regime(2.0-2.5 km/s)of partial melting.Spall strength decreases monotonically with temperature due to thermal softening.Elevated temperatures delay void nucleation but increase density, expanding spall regions and enhancing structural disorder with reduced BCC recovery. For microspallation, melting exacerbates damage, causing smaller voids and intensified atomic ejection, which increases with temperature.Free surface velocity profiles indicate damage:in classical spallation, first drop marks nucleation, and pullback signals spall layers. In micro-spallation,the first drop is irrelevant, but remains valid.Temperature delays pullback signals and weakens Hugoniot Elastic Limit. This study clarifies temperature-shock coupling in Ta spallation, aiding failure prediction in high-temperature shock environments. 展开更多

Prestressed concrete box girders are widely used in bridge engineering.Effective monitoring to accurately detect, localize, and evaluate damage development in inservice box girders is essential to ensure their operational safety. In this study,a four-point bending test based on acoustic emission(AE)technology was conducted on a full-scale in-service box girder with 20 years of service. The correlation between damage evolution and AE parameters was investigated, laying the foundation for the application of AE technology in bridge monitoring. The results show that the cracking load of the box girder after 20 years of service is lower than the theoretical design value.Changes in the cumulative AE ring counts can characterize different failure stages of the box girder.AE signals were grouped by amplitude and peak frequency for analysis, and the effectiveness of different AE signals in tracking damage development was examined. The Gaussian mixture model(GMM)clustering algorithm was used to perform the clustering analysis of rise time/peak amplitude(RA)and ring-down counts/duration(AF).This method can effectively distinguish microcrack types and identify failure modes in different damage stages. In conclusion,AE monitoring can characterize the structural damage state and improve the safety and reliability of box girders. 展开更多

As vital hydraulic infrastructures, concrete dams demand uncompromising safety assurance.Seismic effect commonly serves as a potential factor contributing to the damage of concrete dams, making seismic performance analysis crucial for structural integrity.Numerical simulation based on damage mechanics is usually considered as the approach for investigating the seismic damage behavior of concrete dams.To address the limitations of existing studies and extract the key dynamic characteristics of concrete arch dams,a concrete elastoplastic damage mechanics model is adopted,a seismic load input technique involving the viscoelastic boundary along with equivalent nodal forces is generated, and a spring-contact pair simulation technique formodeling the transverse joints of arch dams is developed. The damage process of an arch dam under the classic Koyna seismic load is simulated, with the damage evolution process under seismic action being characterized. The middle sections of the arch dam near the upper portion are considered regions prone to damage under seismic action.Furthermore, the nonlinear dynamic characteristics caused by the opening and closing collision between transverse joints of the arch damunder strong seismic action are extracted. The extracted dynamic characteristic provides a manifestation for the dynamic damage diagnosis of arch dams based on seismic responses. 展开更多

Damage evolution and seepage behavior variations of rock salt under cyclic loading directly affect the long-term safety of the storage, especially the unclear damage-permeation coupling mechanism of impure rock salt.Through cyclic loading and hydrogen permeation tests, this study systematically investigated the damage evolution and permeability change patterns of impurity rock salt under different stress levels and cycle counts. Results show that the damage evolution presents the stage characteristics of“initial intense damage-gradual stable damage-final rapid damage”.High stress promotes the development of shear cracks and significantly increases the cumulative acoustic emission energy.Permeability increases nonlinearly with stress level and cycle number.Stress level determines the type of damage mechanism, while cycle number determines the degree of damage accumulation. And shear crack penetration is the main controlling factor for the formation of seepage channels.A permeability prediction model based on cumulative acoustic emission energy is established, enabling effective characterization of the damage-permeation coupling relationship. The research provides important theoretical basis for the sealing integrity and safe operation of salt cavern hydrogen storage. 展开更多

Understanding rock damage evolution is essential for deep resource extraction and geological hazard prevention.Sandstone and mudstone are sedimentary rocks exhibiting multiscale damage behaviors critical to assessing engineering rock mass stability. We investigated their damage evolution under uniaxial loading using in situ real-time computed tomography(CT)scanning and mineral-based discrete element simulations. The porosity evolution coefficient(Kpec),pore structure coefficient(Kpnsc),and damage evolution factor(Dk)were derived from CT data.Fractal theory was used to determine the fractal dimension of throats(Dt).These parameters were utilized to evaluate mesoscopic damage statistically and spatially.Threshold segmentation was used to extract minerals, and a grain-based model considering CT results(CT-GBM)was constructed to reveal the macroscopic mechanical response and the evolution of microcracks and contact force chains. Results showed that sandstone, with abundant initial pores and unobstructed throat channels, had higher Kpec and Dt than mudstone, reflecting rapid compression due to the cementation of hard particles. The Kpec and Dt of mudstone, which has high viscosity and low porosity, increased and decreased during loading. The Kpnscvalue indicated that sandstone had a more complex pore network and higher stability, whereas mudstone had a simpler structure and lower mechanical stability.Kpnscwas positively correlated with the degree of damage.Different mineral distributions influenced model performance.Due to the distinct mineral boundaries in sandstone, the CT-GBM simulated the crack evolution and anisotropic failure with high accuracy.Conversely, the simplified GBM model was more suitable for describing the brittle failure of mudstone due to its fine and uniform particles. The failure mechanism of sandstone was primarily intracrystalline cracks, with the contact force chains exhibiting dispersion, compaction, and shearing. In contrast, the mudstone displayed uniform brittle failure and rapid crack propagation. This study offers methodological insights for predicting rock mass safety. 展开更多

Silicon carbide(SiC)ceramics are extensively utilized in aerospace, national defense, and petrochemical industries due to their superior physical and chemical properties. The processing of bulk SiC ceramics necessitates precise and efficient grinding techniques to produce components with satisfactory functionality. However, the inherent high hardness and brittleness of SiC ceramics present significant challenges during grinding, leading to severe brittle fracture and tool wear that compromise both surface integrity and production efficiency.Although ductile-regime grinding of SiC ceramics can be achieved by enhancing machine tool accuracy and stiffness while optimizing wheel performance alongside appropriate selection of process parameters,a comprehensive summary of the mechanisms underlying damage evolution during grinding is lacking, and a mature grinding process for SiC ceramics has yet to be developed. To bridge this gap,the sintering technologies, mechanical properties, and microstructures of SiC ceramics were briefly covered. The grinding-induced damage mechanism and low-damage grinding technologies of SiC ceramics were summarized. The fundamental science underlying the ductile deformation and removal mechanisms of brittle solids was emphasized.Additionally, attention was directed towards the critical role of hybrid energy field grinding in minimizing brittle damages and promoting removal efficiency. This review not only elucidates the intrinsic interactions between the work material and abrasives, but also offers valuable insights for optimizing the grinding processes of brittle solids. 展开更多

Three-dimensional printing(3DP)offers valuable insight into the characterization of natural rocks and the verification of theoretical models due to its high reproducibility and accurate replication of complex defects such as cracks and pores. In this study,3DP gypsum samples with different printing directions were subjected to a series of uniaxial compression tests with in situ micro-computed tomography(micro-CT)scanning to quantitatively investigate their mechanical anisotropic properties and damage evolution characteristics.Based on the two-dimensional(2D)CT images obtained at different scanning steps,a novel void ratio variable was derived using the mean value and variance of CT intensity.Additionally,a constitutive model was formulated incorporating the proposed damage variable, utilizing the void ratio variable. The crack evolution and crack morphology of 3DP gypsum samples were obtained and analyzed using the 3D models reconstructed from the CT images. The results indicate that 3DP gypsum samples exhibit mechanical anisotropic characteristics similar to those found in naturally sedimentary rocks. The mechanical anisotropy is attributed to the bedding planes formed between adjacent layers and pillar-like structures along the printing direction formed by CaSO4·2H2O crystals of needle-like morphology. The mean gray intensity of the voids has a positive linear relationship with the threshold value, while the CT variance and void ratio have concave and convex relationships, respectively. The constitutive model can effectively match the stress–strain curves obtained from uniaxial compression experiments. This study provides comprehensive explanations of the failure modes and anisotropic mechanisms of 3DP gypsum samples, which is important for characterizing and understanding the failure mechanism and microstructural evolution of 3DP rocks when modeling natural rock behavior. 展开更多

Gas storage in abandoned mines is one way to reuse waste space resources. The surrounding rock of gas storage reservoirs in underground roadways undergoes damage and deformation under the cyclic loading of gas charging and discharging, which can pose a risk to the safety of the reservoirs. This study establishes a true triaxial numerical model of rock mass with the discrete element method(DEM)and explores the crack evolution of surrounding rock of underground gas storage during cyclic loading and unloading. Also,a damage evolution model in numerical analysis considering residual deformation is developed to explain the experimental results. As was revealed, cyclic loading and unloading resulted in fatigue damage in the specimen and caused strength deterioration of the specimen.During the loading process, the uniformly distributed force chains of the rock mass redistributed, evolving gradually to mostly transverse force chains. This contributed to the appearance of blank areas in the force chains when through cracks appear. The ratio of tensile cracks to shear cracks gradually decreases and finally stabilizes at 7:1.The damage evolution model considering residual strain can be mutually verified with the numerical simulation results.Based on the DEM model,it was found that there was a certain threshold of confining pressure. When the confining pressure exceeded 30 MPa,the deformation to ductility of sandstone samples began to accelerate, with a greater residual strength. This study provides a theoretical basis for analyzing the long-term mechanical behavior of surrounding rock of gas storage in abandoned mines. 展开更多

To investigate the effects of the spraying process and different fibers on the mechanical properties and failure patterns of ultrahigh performance concrete(UHPC),three types of fibers were used. These fibers were formed using both spraying and molding methods.Uniaxial compression tests were conducted, and two nondestructive monitoring techniques, acoustic emission(AE)and digital image correlation, were employed to monitor the uniaxial compression tests. The results indicated that the compressive strength of UHPC with single steel fibers and hybrid fibers increased by about 19%and 14%compared with those of UHPC with polyoxymethylene fibers. In comparison with molded UHPC,sprayed UHPC showed a slight improvement in compressive strength.Specimens containing steel fibers exhibited better post-cracking ductility, whereas those with only polyoxymethylene fibers displayed a certain degree of brittle failure. In sprayed UHPC,the onset of significant internal damage was delayed, which was related to the redistribution of internal fibers. The failure of UHPC was characterized by primary tensile cracks, supplemented by shear cracks. The spraying process can better restrict the development of tensile cracks in UHPC.Sprayed UHPC typically exhibited multiple crack developments leading to failure, whereas molded UHPC generally failed in the form of a single main crack penetrating the specimen. The addition of steel fibers delayed the occurrence of local stress concentration zones, aligning well with AE monitoring data. 展开更多

Evaluation of damage evolution effects in biodegradable pure Mg was carried out, using transmission electron microscope as surrogate irradiation for high-energy radionuclide β decay in Brachytherapy.Time-dependent quantitative defect production, evolution dynamics, and evolution statistics were revealed in-situ for two prism foils(z=[1.210],[10.10]),in as-received and heat-treated pure Mg,after 300 keV electron irradiation up to 0.468 dpa at R.T.Preferred nucleation of basal-plane interstitial-type 1/6loops was confirmed,in addition to a small portion of prism-plane 1/3loops.No cavities were found.A higher yield of point defect concentration and a more evident trend of defect coarsening were identified in[1.210]than in[10.10].Pre-existing dislocations(on the orders of 1013−1014 m−2)in pure Mg resulted in a delay of the first occurrence of visible defects.Defect migration and elastic interactions governed the microstructural evolution of electron irradiation damage in pure Mg,giving rise to events of loop coalescence, growth, and sometimes rotation of habit plane. The influence of incident electron energy can be correlated to the rates of point defect production, and is quantifiable;however, interfered by defect cluster stability, defect mobility, and defect interactions. This forms an important theoretical basis for the application of Mg subjected to MeV-level β-decay radiation in Brachytherapy. The paper concludes with a brief comparison between Mg and conventional Ti casing, outlines the advantages and challenges, and provides reference points for the validation of Mg/Mg-alloys in Brachytherapy seed application. 展开更多

To address the issue of extreme thermal-induced arching in CRTS II slab tracks due to joint damage,an optimized joint repair model was proposed.First, the formula for calculating the safe temperature rise of the track was derived based on the principle of stationary potential energy.Considering interlayer evolution and structural crack propagation,an optimized joint repair model for the track was established and validated.Subsequently, the impact of joint repair on track damage and arch stability under extreme temperatures was studied, and a comprehensive evaluation of the feasibility of joint repair and the evolution of damage after repair was conducted. The results show that after the joint repair, the temperature rise of the initial damage of the track structure can be increased by 11℃.Under the most unfavorable heating load with a superimposed temperature gradient, the maximum stiffness degradation index SDEG in the track structure is reduced by about 81.16%following joint repair. The joint repair process could effectively reduce the deformation of the slab arching under high temperatures, resulting in a reduction of 93.96%in upward arching deformation. After repair, with the damage to interfacing shear strength, the track arch increases by 2.616 mm. 展开更多

To understand the anisotropy dependence of the damage evolution and material removal during the machining process of MgF2 single crystals, nanoscratch tests of MgF2 single crystals with different crystal planes and directions were systematically performed, and surface morphologies of the scratched grooves under different conditions were analyzed. The experimental results indicated that anisotropy considerably affected the damage evolution in the machining process of MgF2 single crystals.A stress field model induced by the scratch was developed by considering the anisotropy, which indicated that during the loading process, median cracks induced by the tensile stress initiated and propagated at the front of the indenter.Lateral cracks induced by tensile stress initiated and propagated on the subsurface during the unloading process. In addition, surface radial cracks induced by the tensile stress were easily generated during the unloading process. The stress change led to the deflection of the propagation direction of lateral cracks. Therefore, the lateral cracks propagated to the workpiece surface, resulting in brittle removal in the form of chunk chips. The plastic deformation parameter indicated that the more the slip systems were activated, the more easily the plastic deformation occurred. The cleavage fracture parameter indicated that the cracks propagated along the activated cleavage planes, and the brittle chunk removal was owing to the subsurface cleavage cracks propagating to the crystal surface.Under the same processing parameters, the scratch of the(001)crystal plane along the[100]crystal-orientation was found to be the most conducive to achieving plastic machining of MgF2 single crystals. The theoretical results agreed well with the experimental results, which will not only enhance the understanding of the anisotropy dependence of the damage evolution and removal process during the machining of MgF2 crystals, but also provide a theoretical foundation for achieving the high-efficiency and low-damage processing of anisotropic single crystals. 展开更多

In-situ rock failures can result from stress changes due to pure loading and/or unloading. Understanding of the damage evolution behavior in brittle rocks during loading and unloading is imperative for the designs of rock structures. In this paper, we investigate the damage evolution characteristics of a granitic rock during loading and unloading after a series of triaxial experiments performed at different confining pressures. The axial stress-axial strain variations of the tested specimens revealed that the specimens undergoing unloading fail with a lower axial strain compared to the specimens failed purely by loading. Higher confining pressures were observed to exacerbate the difference. Volumetric strain versus axial strain curves indicated that the curves reverse the trend with the beginning of major damage of specimens. We suggest here a new form of equation to describe the secant modulus variation of brittle rocks against the axial stress for the unloading process. Failure mechanisms of tested specimens showed two distinct patterns, namely, specimens under pure loading failed with a single distinct shear fracture while for the unloading case specimens displayed multiple intersecting fractures. In addition, analysis of the evolution of dissipation and elastic energy during deformation of the specimens under loading and unloading conditions showed differentiable characteristics. Moreover, we evaluated the variations of two damage indices defined based on the energy dissipation and secant modulus evolution during deformation and observed that both of them satisfactorily distinguish key stages of damage evolution. 展开更多

Rock-encased-backfill(RB)structures are common in underground mining, for example in the cut-andfill and stoping methods. To understand the effects of cyclic excavation and blasting activities on the damage of these RB structures,a series of triaxial stepwise-increasing-amplitude cyclic loading experiments was conducted with cylindrical RB specimens(rock on outside, backfill on inside)with different volume fractions of rock(VF=0.48,0.61,0.73,and 0.84),confining pressures(0,6,9,and 12 MPa),and cyclic loading rates(200,300,400,and 500 N/s).The damage evolution and meso-crack formation during the cyclic tests were analyzed with results from stress-strain hysteresis loops, acoustic emission events, and post-failure X-ray 3D fracture morphology. The results showed significant differences between cyclic and monotonic loadings of RB specimens, particularly with regard to the generation of shear microcracks, the development of stress memory and strain hardening, and the contact forces and associated friction that develops along the rock-backfill interface. One important finding is that as a function of the number of cycles, the elastic strain increases linearly and the dissipated energy increases exponentially. Also, compared with monotonic loading, the cyclic strain hardening characteristics are more sensitive to rising confining pressures during the initial compaction stage.Another finding is that compared with monotonic loading, more shear microcracks are generated during every reloading stage, but these microcracks tend to be dispersed and lessen the likelihood of large shear fracture formation. The transition from elastic to plastic behavior varies depending on the parameters of each test(confinement, volume fraction, and cyclic rate),and an interesting finding was that the transformation to plastic behavior is significantly lower under the conditions of 0.73 rock volume fraction,400 N/s cyclic loading rate, and 9 MPa confinement. All the findings have important practical implications on the ability of backfill to support underground excavations. 展开更多

Plate-impact experiments have been carried out to examine the effect of grain size and grain arrangement on the damage evolution of ultrapure aluminum. Two groups of samples, "cross-cut" and "longitudinal-cut," are obtained from the rolled aluminum rod along different directions. The peak compressive stress is approximately 1.25 GPa–1.61 GPa, which can cause incipient spall damage that is correlated to the material microstructure. The metallographic analyses of all recovered samples show that nearly all damage nucleates at the grain boundaries, especially those with larger curvature. Moreover, under lower shock stress, the spall strength of the "longitudinal-cut" sample is smaller than that of the "crosscut" sample, because the different grain sizes and arrangement of the two samples cause different nucleation, growth, and coalescence processes. In this study, the difference in the damage distribution between "longitudinal-cut" and "cross-cut" samples and the causes for this difference under lower shock-loading conditions are also analyzed by both qualitative and semi-quantitative methods. It is very important for these conclusions to establish a reasonable and perfect equation of damage evolution for ductile metals. 展开更多

To investigate the dynamic damage evolution characteristics of bank slopes with serrated structural planes, the shaking table model test and the numerical simulation were utilized. The main findings indicate that under continuous seismic loads, the deformation of the bank slope increased, particularly around the hydro-fluctuation belt, accompanying by the pore water pressure rising. The soil pressure increased and then decreased showed dynamic variation characteristics. As the undulation angle of the serrated structural planes increased(30°, 45°, and 60°),the failure modes were climbing, climbinggnawing, and gnawing respectively. The first-order natural frequency was used to calculate the damage degree(Dd)of the bank slope.During microseisms and small earthquakes,it was discovered that the evolution of Dd followed the“S”shape, which was fitted by a logic function.Additionally, the quadratic function was used to fit the Dd during moderately strong earthquakes.Through the numerical simulation, the variation characteristics of safety factors(Sf)for slopes with serrated structural planes and slopes with straight structural planes were compared.Under continuous seismic loads, the Sf of slopes with straight structural planes reduce stalely, whereas the Sf for slopes with serrated structural planes was greater than the former and the reduction rate was increasing. 展开更多
