As mining operations progressively extend to greater depths annually, the water hazard associated with the Ordovician limestone floor has emerged as a critical threat to the safe extraction of coal within the lower coal group of North China-type coalelds. The combined eects of high conned water pressure and mining-induced stress activate weak zones within concealed geological structures, transforming them into conduits for water ingress and leading to frequent water inrush incidents.Conned water inltrates structurally vulnerable areas, triggering floor water inrush events that result in substantial losses. This study commences with the establishment of a macroscopic geological model, followed by the development of a mechanical model for water inrush occurring in collapsed columns and faults, which incorporates the coupled influences of mining-induced stress and conned water pressure.Theoretical analysis indicates that, under uniform mining conditions,a consistent relationship exists between the short semi-axis length(a,in meters)of the collapsed column and the fault opening width(δ,in meters).Notably,it is inferred that concealed collapsed columns are more susceptible to water inrush than concealed faults, thereby providing a theoretical foundation for an empirical observation that previously lacked validation. The water inrush mechanics model elucidates the intrinsic relationships among the principal factors aecting water inrush under consistent mining conditions.Specically, the relative critical conditions for water inrush in collapsed columns-characterized by varying overburden thickness parameters and the ratio of short to long axes(a/b)-exhibit a monotonically decreasing trend.Furthermore, the relative critical value for fault water inrush decreases monotonically with increasing fault dip angle and is inversely proportional to both the fault opening width and the fault extension length. These ndings contribute to the theoretical framework for the prevention and control of mine water hazards, thereby providing a robust basis for safe mining practices and the mitigation of water-related risks in mining operations1. 展开更多

The mining industry is frequently subjected to various disasters, one of the major concerns is water-related disasters, particularly seam floor water inrush. These disasters pose significant threats to the safety and production of deep coal mines. The primary reason for this is that the fracturing of the rock mass induces the formation of a fluid(water)with both kinetic and potential energy. In this paper,a novel water inrush mechanism for deep floor failure due to water hammer effects is proposed based on the Xingdong coal mine in China. The water hammer pressure within rock pore channels has a different impact on the surrounding rock, leading to the degradation of the rock mass channel through repeated conduction and instantaneous cutoff. To further investigate this phenomenon,a progressive corrosion fracture mechanics(PCFM)model induced by a water hammer is established. The results show that the water hammer pressure caused by instantaneous channel truncation increases with increasing water flow velocity. The chemical damage factor(i.e.,stress corrosion fracture)is also incorporated into the Dugdale-Barenblatt(D-B)model to analyze the factors influencing the PCFM.These findings indicate that the greater the degree of damage is,the more likely the concealed fault is to experience water inrush. Finally, methods for controlling water inrush caused by the water hammer effects of deep floors are proposed. The failure mechanisms of the water hammer and the PCFM provide theoretical and practical guidance for controlling water inrush from the deep floor. 展开更多

This paper addresses the accuracy and timeliness limitations of traditional comprehensive prediction methods by proposing an approach of decision-level fusion of multisource data.A risk prediction indicator system was established for water and mud inrush in tunnels by analyzing advanced prediction data for specifi c tunnel segments.Additionally, the indicator weights were determined using the analytic hierarchy process combined with the Huber weighting method.Subsequently,a multisource data decision-layer fusion algorithm was utilized to generate fused imaging results for tunnel water and mud inrush risk predictions.Meanwhile, risk analysis was performed for different tunnel sections to achieve spatial and temporal complementarity within the indicator system and optimize redundant information. Finally, model feasibility was validated using the CZ Project Sejila Mountain Tunnel segment as a case study, yielding favorable risk prediction results and enabling effi cient information fusion and support for construction decision-making. 展开更多

With the depletion of shallow mineral resources, mining operations are extending to greater depths and larger scales, increasing the risk of water inrush disasters, particularly from confined aquifers intersected by faults. This paper reviews the current state of research on fault-induced water inrushes in mining faces, examining the damage characteristics and permeability of fractured floor rock, the mechanical behavior of faults under mining stress, and the mechanisms driving water inrush.Advances in prevention technologies, risk assessment, and prediction methods are also summarized.Research shows that damage evolution in fractured floor rock, coupled with fluid-solid interactions, provides the primary pathways for water inrush.Stress-seepage coupling in porous media plays a decisive role in determining inrush potential.Mining-induced stress redistribution can activate faults, with parameters such as dip angle and internal friction angle controlling stress evolution and slip.Critical triggers include the hydraulic connectivity among faults, aquifers, and mining-induced fracture networks, followed by hydraulic erosion.A multi-pronged prevention framework has been developed, integrating precise fault detection, targeted grouting for water sealing, drainage to reduce water pressure, optimized waterproof coal pillar design, and dynamic risk assessment and prediction. However, gaps remain in understanding multi-physical field coupling under deep mining conditions, establishing quantitative criteria for fault activation-induced water inrush, and refining control technologies.Future work should focus on multi-scale numerical simulations, advanced active control measures, and intelligent, integrated prevention systems to clarify the mechanisms of fault-induced water inrush and enhance theoretical and technical support for mine safety. 展开更多

Karst collapse columns typically appear unpredictably and without a uniform spatial arrangement, posing challenges for mining operations and water inrush risk assessment. As major structural pathways for mine water inrush, they are responsible for some of the most frequent and severe water-related disasters in coal mining.Understanding the mechanisms of water inrush in these collapse columns is therefore essential for effective disaster prevention and control, making it a key research priority.Additionally, investigating the developmental characteristics of collapse columns is crucial for analyzing seepage instability mechanisms. In such a context, this paper provides a comprehensive review of four critical aspects:(1)The development characteristics and hydrogeological properties of collapse columns;(2)Fluid-solid coupling mechanisms under mining-induced stress;(3)Non-Darcy seepage behavior in fractured rock masses;(4)Flow regime transitions and mass variation effects.Key findings highlight the role of flow-solid coupling in governing the seepage mechanisms of fractured rock masses within karst collapse columns.By synthesizing numerous studies on flow pattern transitions, this paper outlines the complete seepage process-from groundwater movement within the aquifer to its migration through the collapse column and eventual inflow into mine roadways or working faces-along with the associated transformations in flow patterns.Furthermore, the seepage characteristics and water inrush behaviors influenced by particle migration are examined through both experimental and numerical simulation approaches. 展开更多

Deep-buried tunnels traversing complex hydrogeological zones with clay-sand-filled structures are highly susceptible to water inrush hazards.High ground temperature, high in-situ stress, and highwater pressure render these events a complex thermohydro-mechanical coupling problem. However, current research on water inrush often insufficiently investigates the multi-field coupled instability mechanisms within highly permeable filling media and frequently neglects the influence of temperature. This study aims to investigate the evolutionary mechanism of seepage instability in filling structures that trigger water inrush hazards under the complex conditions of deep-buried tunnels.Laboratory tests were conducted using a large-scale triaxial thermo-hydro-mechanical system, and a DEM-CFD coupled model was established to numerically simulate the seepage process. The influences of temperature, particle size distribution, and confining pressure were analyzed on the seepage characteristics of the filling media.By examining the variations in water inflow rate, discharged clay-sand particle mass, porosity and permeability,we analyzed the entire process of seepage behavior and instability evolution under the thermohydro-mechanical coupling effect. The results show that:(1)Temperature significantly affects water inflow, discharged particle mass, porosity, and permeability.Higher temperatures remarkably increase porosity and permeability, with the maximum permeability coefficient of filling media at 90℃being 1.6 times that at 45℃.(2)The Talbol power index exhibits a positive correlation with water inflow rate and discharged particle mass, while confining pressure is negatively correlated with water inflow rate.(3)For filling materials dominated by clay-sand particles or with favorable gradation, the seepage instability process exhibits distinct phase characteristics, with different stages reflected in changes in water inflow, porosity, and permeability. The experimental results are consistent with the numerical simulation results.(4)In high ground temperature environments, temperature enhances convective heat transfer and energy exchange between water and filling media, thereby accelerating the process of water inrush caused by seepage instability. The findings provide scientific support for risk assessment, early warning, and prevention of water inrush hazards in deep-buried tunnels crossing clay-sand-filled structures. 展开更多

In order to study the mechanism of confined water inrush from coal seam floor, the main influences on permeability in the process of triaxial seepage experiments were analyzed with methods such as laboratory experiments, theoretical analysis and mechanical model calculation. The crack extension rule and the ultimate destruction form of the rock specimens were obtained. The mechanism of water inrush was explained reasonably from mechanical point of view. The practical criterion of water inrush was put forward. The results show that the rock permeability "mutation" phenomenon reflects the differences of stress state and cracks extension rate when the rock internal crack begins to extend in large-scale.The rock ultimate destruction form is related to the rock lithology and the angle between crack and principal stress. The necessary condition of floor water inrush is that the mining pressure leads to the extension and transfixion of the crack. The sufficient condition of floor water inrush is that the confined water’s expansionary stress in normal direction and shear stress in tangential direction must be larger than the internal stress in the crack. With the two conditions satisfied at the same time, the floor water inrush accident will occur. 展开更多

With the gradual depletion of shallow coal resources, the Yanzhou mine in China will enter the lower coal seam mining phase. However,as mining depth increases, lower coal seam mining in Yanzhou is threatened by water inrush in the Benxi Formation limestone and Ordovician limestone. The existing prediction models for the water burst at the bottom of the coal seam are less accurate than expected owing to various controlling factors and their intrinsic links.By analyzing the hydrogeological exploration data of the Baodian lower seam and combining the results of the water inrush coefficient method and the Yanzhou mine pressure seepage test,an evaluation model of the seepage barrier capacity of the fault was established. The evaluation results show the water of the underlying limestone aquifer in the Baodian mine area mainly threatens the lower coal mining through the fault fracture zone. The security of mining above confined aquifer in the Baodian mine area gradually decreases from southwest to northeast.By comparing the water inrush coefficient method and the evaluation model of fault impermeability, the results show the evaluation model based on seepage barrier conditions is closer to the actual situation when analyzing the water breakout situation at the working face. 展开更多

Correct identification of water inrush sources is particularly important to prevent and control mine water disasters.Hydrochemical analysis,Fisher discriminant analysis, and geothermal verification analysis were used to identify and verify the water sources of the multi-aquifer groundwater system in Gubei coal mine,Anhui Province,North China. Results show that hydrochemical water types of the Cenozoic top aquifer included HCO3-Na+K-Ca,HCO3-Na+K-Mg and HCO3-Na+K,and this aquifer was easily distinguishable from other aquifers because of its low concentration of Na++K+and Cl-.The Cenozoic middle and bottom aquifers, the Permian fissure aquifer, and the Taiyuan and Ordovician limestone aquifers were mainly characterized by the Cl-Na+K and SO4-Cl-Na+K or HCO3-Cl-Na+K water types, and their hydrogeochemistries were similar. Therefore, water sources could not be identified via hydrochemical analysis.Fisher model was established based on the hydrogeochemical characteristics, and its discrimination rate was 89.19%.Fisher discrimination results were improved by combining them with the geothermal analysis results, and this combination increased the identification rate to 97.3%and reasonably explained the reasons behind two water samples misjudgments. The methods described herein are also applicable to other mines with similar geological and hydrogeological conditions in North China. 展开更多

In this paper, a combination of field measurement, theoretical analysis and numerical simulation were used to study the main control factors of coal mine water inrush in a main aquifer coal seam and its control scheme. On the basis of revealing and analyzing the coal seam as the main aquifer in western coal mine of Xiao Jihan coal mine, the simulation software of PHASE-2D was applied to analyze the water inflow under different influencing factors. The results showed that water inflow increases logarithmically with the coal seam thickness, increases as a power function with the permeability coefficient of the coal seam, and increases linearly with the coal seam burial depth and the head pressure; The evaluation model for the factors of coal seam water inrush was gained by using nonlinear regression analysis with SPSS. The mine water inrush risk evaluation partition within the scope of the mining field was obtained, through the engineering application in Xiao Jihan coal mine. To ensure the safe and efficient production of the mine, we studied the coal mine water disaster prevention and control measures of a main aquifer coal seam in aspects of roadway driving and coal seam mining. 展开更多

Water inrush is one of the most dangerous disasters in coal mining.Due to the large-scale mining and complicated hydrogeological conditions, thousands of deaths and huge economic losses have been caused by water inrush disasters in China. There are two main factors determining the occurrence of water inrush:water source and water-conducting pathway.Research on the formation mechanism of the water-conducting pathway is the main direction to prevent and control the water inrush, and the seepage mechanism of rock mass during the formation of the water-conducting pathway is the key for the research on the water inrush mechanism. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review of seepage mechanisms during water inrush from three aspects,i.e.,mechanisms of stress-seepage coupling, fow regime transformation and rock erosion.Through numerical methods and experimental analysis, the evolution law of stress and seepage felds in the process of water inrush is fully studied;the fuid movement characteristics under diferent fow regimes are clearly summarized;the law of particle initiation and migration in the process of water inrush is explored, and the efect of rock erosion on hydraulic and mechanical properties of the rock media is also studied. Finally, some limitations of current research are analyzed, and the suggestions for future research on water inrush are proposed in this review. 展开更多

Grouting is the most commonly used method to control water inrush in underground engineering.Traditional cement-based materials are easy to dilute and hard to coagulate under the influence of large flow and high-velocity water inrush. To address these deficiencies,a new type of polymer grouting material with an excellent expansion ratio was synthesised. The material quickly absorbs water and has an expansion ratio of 1:300.The material is composed of a superabsorbent polymer(SAP),glycerol, and ethanol. The effects of water quality on the expansion ratio and expansion rate of the material were examined, and the best solid–liquid ratio for the slurry was determined by fluidity measurements.A karst specially designed pipeline water inrush test device showed that 800 g of SAP can achieve 0.6 m/s water flow blockage in the smooth pipeline, demonstrating that the ability of the SAP slurry to block water inrush is superior to those of other materials. This study provides a reference for water inrush plugging, and has important implications for the reduction and control of karst pipeline-type water inrush disasters, ensuring the safety of construction sites and preventing loss of life and damage to property. 展开更多

Water inrush is one of the most serious geological hazards in underground engineering construction. In order to effectively prevent and control the occurrence of water inrush,a new attribute interval recognition theory and method is proposed to systematically evaluate the risk of water inrush in karst tunnels. Its innovation mainly includes that the value of evaluation index is an interval rather than a certain value;the single-index attribute evaluation model is improved non-linearly based on the idea of normal distribution;the synthetic attribute interval analysis method based on improved intuitionistic fuzzy theory is proposed. The TFN-AHP method is proposed to analyze the weight of evaluation index.By analyzing geological factors and engineering factors in tunnel zone,a multi-grade hierarchical index system for tunnel water inrush risk assessment is established. The proposed method is applied to ventilation incline of Xiakou tunnel, and its rationality and practicability is verified by comparison with field situation and evaluation results of other methods. In addition, the results evaluated by this method, which considers that water inrush is a complex non-linear system and the geological conditions have spatial variability, are more accurate and reliable. And it has good applicability in solving the problem of certain and uncertain problem. 展开更多

To study the mechanism and evolution process of water inrush geohazards under the complex geological environment of the karst cave-fractured zone,a large-scale physical threedimensional(3 D)model test was first performed. Then the conceptual model for the evolution process of water inrush geohazards and the simplified theoretical model for the critical hydraulic pressure were both established based on the main characteristics of the water inrush geohazard in the engineering background and that in the model test.A new method was developed for modeling the geological environment of the karst cave-structural plane, and two formulae describing the critical water pressure of water inrush geohazards under two failure models of tensile-shear fracture failure and compressionshear fracture failure were also deduced based on fracture mechanics. The results showed that:(1)the evolution process of the water inrush geohazard can be divided into four stages, which include the initial balance, the propagation of original cracks, the formation of the dominant water inrush channel, and the instability of the waterproof rock mass;(2)the suddenness of water inrush geohazards becomes stronger with the increase of the hydraulic pressure;(3)the calculated critical hydraulic pressure of water inrush geohazards is similar to the measured critical hydraulic pressure in the model test, which validated the accuracies of the theoretical model, and the failure model of water inrush geohazards in this research is compression-shear fracture failure. 展开更多

Support crushing and water inrush when mining under an unconsolidated confined aquifer in the Qidong Coal Mine was prevented by roof pre-blasting.The mechanism and applicable conditions for this method have been studied. The results show that when an overburden structure that may cause support crushing and a water inrush accident exists the weakening of the primary key stratum, which thereby reduces its weighting step, roof pre-blasting is both feasible and effective. If the position of the primary key stratum can be moved upward to exceed 10 times the mining height the possibility of support crushing and water inrush disaster caused by key stratum compound breakage will be lowered. The overburden structure of the number 7121 working face was considered during the design of a technical proposal involving roof pre-blasting.After comprehensively analyzing the applicability of roof pre-blasting the resulting design prevented support crushing and water inrush disasters from happening at the number 7121 working face and laid a solid foundation for mining safely. 展开更多

Water-and-mud inrush disasters have become a major challenge in underground engineering for the construction of tunnels in sandstone and slate interbedded Presinian strata.Disaster prediction and prevention rely in part on realistic modeling and observation of the disaster process,as well as the identification and examination of the underlying mechanisms.Based on the geological conditions and the historical records of the Xinping Tunnel on the China–Laos Railway,an engineering geological model of the water-and-mud inrush was established.A physical model test that accurately reproduced water-and-mud inrush during tunnel excavation in sandstone and slate interbedded strata was also carried out. Then, testing was conducted that examined the stress and strain, seepage pressure, and high-leakage flow of the surrounding rock. The results indicated that the water-and-mud inrush proceeded through three stages:seepage stage,high-leakage flow stage, and attenuation stage. In essence, the disaster was a catastrophic process, during which the water-resistant stratum was reduced to a critical safety thickness,a water-inrush channel formed, and the water-resistant stratum gradually failed under the influence of excavation unloading and in situ stress–seepage coupling.Parameters such as the stress and strain, seepage pressure, and flow of the surrounding rock had evident stage-related features during water-and-mud inrush, and their variation indicated the formation, development, and evolution of the disaster. As the tunnel face advanced, the trend of the stress–strain curve of the surrounding rock shifted from sluggish to rapid in its speed of increase. The characteristics of strain energy density revealed the erosion and weakening effect of groundwater on the surrounding rock. The seepage pressure and the thickness of the water-resistant stratum had a positive linear relationship, and the flow and thickness a negative linear relationship. There was a pivotal point at which the seepage pressure changed from high to low and the flow shifted from low to high. The thickness of the water-resistant stratum corresponding to the pivotal point was deemed the critical safety thickness. 展开更多

Floor water inrush is one of the main types of coal mine water hazards. With the development of deep mining, the prediction and evaluation of floor water inrush is particularly significant. This paper proposes a variable weight model, which combines a multi-factor interaction matrix(MFIM)and the technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution(TOPSIS)to implement the risk assessment of floor water inrush in coal mines.Based on the MFIM,the interaction between seven evaluation indices, including the confined water pressure, water supply condition and aquifer water yield property, floor aquifuge thickness, fault water transmitting ability, fracture development degree, mining depth and thickness and their influence on floor water inrush were considered. After calculating the constant weights, the active degree evaluation was used to assign a variable weight to the indices. The values of the middle layer and final risk level were obtained by TOPSIS.The presented model was successfully applied in the 9901 working face in the Taoyang Mine and four additional coal mines and the results were highly consistent with the engineering situations.Compared with the existing nonlinear evaluation methods, the proposed model had advantages in terms of the weighting, principle explanation, and algorithm structure. 展开更多

Cases of simultaneous inrush of high-temperature water and harmful gases are infrequently reported in areas without geothermal anomalies, hydrocarbon source rock,or coal measures. For this,we investigated the origin, development, and formation of the high-temperature water and harmful gases that rushed into Bangfu tunnel,Southwest China.During excavation of the Bangfu tunnel through the F1-2 fault in sandstone,a significant incident occurred involving a sudden influx of high-temperature water(45.4℃)of NaeHCO3type and harmful gases(CO2,H2S).An extensive geological examination uncovered a fault network extending from the crust to the mantle in the tunnel site area. The site features a substantial presence of both surface water and groundwater.Furthermore, within the middle crust at depths ranging from 19 km to 23 km,there are high-temperature ductile melts enriched with fluids and gases.Monitoring and experiments conducted on the harmful gases reveal that the primary source is identified in the crust, with the mantle source being secondary, followed by the atmospheric source being a minimal contribution. The hydrochemical and isotopic composition characteristics of the hightemperature rushed water indicate its evolution was formed through the infiltration of atmospheric precipitation from cold groundwater of the CaeHCO3type.The mechanism underlying the formation of the inrush high-temperature water and harmful gases can be outlined as follows. The fault network, spanning from the crust to the mantle, serves as a migration pathway for the inflow substances.Mantlederived volatiles and high-temperature melts make heat energy facilitate the inrush activity, while groundwater contributes to heat transfer and acts as a medium for gas transport. As mantle-derived volatiles migrate towards the surface through the fault network, they mix with high-temperature melts and crust-derived gases, forming a crust-mantle mixed gas.Through processes such as deep hydrothermal circulation, shallow hydrothermal circulation, waterock reaction,near-surface mixing, and dilution,CaeHCO3type cold groundwater transforms into high-temperature water of NaeHCO3type.The methodologies and findings of our research offer insights into the route selection, investigation, and construction of mountain tunneling projects under similar geological conditions. 展开更多

A water-resistant key strata model of a goaf floor prior to main roof weighting was developed to explore the relationship between water inrush from the floor and main roof weighting. The stress distribution, broken characteristics, and the risk area for water inrush of the water-resistant key strata were analysed using elastic thin plate theory. The formula of the maximum water pressure tolerated by the waterresistant key strata was deduced. The effects of the caved load of the goaf, the goaf size prior to main roof weighting, the advancing distance of the workface or weighting step, and the thickness of the waterresistant key strata on the breaking and instability of the water-resistant key strata were analysed. The results indicate that the water inrush from the floor can be predicted and prevented by controlling the initial or periodic weighting step with measures such as artificial forced caving, thus achieving safe mining conditions above confined aquifers. The findings provide an important theoretical basis for determining water inrush from the floor when mining above confined aquifers. 展开更多
