Three-beam wire-feed laser cladding, which generates a uniform energy distribution with a wire vertically fed into the molten pool,is a promising additive manufacturing technology. In this study,an experimental investigation and a statistical analysis of Ti-6Al-4V wire cladding using three-beam laser coaxial wire-feed cladding technology coupled with a 2 kW continuous fiber laser were carried out.The influences of the main parameters, including the laser power, wire feeding speed, and laser scanning speed,on the cladding geometry and process were investigated. The prediction models correlating the process parameters and clad geometry were developed via the response surface methodology(RSM).The models were checked using analysis of variance(ANOVA).Through optimization, the optimal parameters were achieved for the required clad with a width-to-height ratio of 5:1.A high-speed camera was used to investigate the cladding process under various process parameters. The laser power positively affected the widths of the molten pool and cladding layer. The molten pool and clad heights decreased with increases in laser power and scanning speed.Fine acicular martensite grains in the colony and basket-weave distributions were predominant in the cross-section of the cladding layer. The macrostructure investigation showed that the widths of columnar prior-β grains decreased with the increase in laser scanning speed. 展开更多

The laser-clad Fe45 alloy coating inherently comprises multiple crystalline phases, resulting in a heterogeneous microstructural distribution that influences its performance. In this study, the rare earth yttria(Y2O3)was employed to modify laser-clad Fe45 alloy coatings, and the effects of Y2O3 addition on their microstructure, microhardness, and tribological properties were investigated. As the Y2O3 content increases from 0%to 0.3wt.%,the dominant microstructure transforms from columnar crystals to fine cellular and equiaxed crystals. The modified coating with 0.3wt.%Y2O3 achieves a surface hardness of 568 HV0.3and a wear volume of 1,735.41 um~3,representing a 14.06%increase in hardness and a 51.16%reduction in wear volume compared to the undoped coating.Further increasing the Y2O3 content from 0.3wt.%to 0.9wt.%gradually leads to the emergence of a coarser feather-like microstructure, characterized by a dendritic framework with inter-dendritic equiaxed crystals.Concurrently, both the hardness and wear resistance of the coating decrease.Nevertheless, all Y2O3-modified coatings surpass the undoped Fe45 coating in both hardness and wear resistance.Appropriate Y2O3 doping effectively refines the Fe45 alloy coating's microstru cture and induces lattice distortion, thereby enhancing its hardness and wear resistance. 展开更多

High-entropy alloy(HEA)coatings can effectively improve the wear properties of light alloys.CeO₂and Y₂O₃are two common rare-earth oxides that are often used as dopants to modify the structure and properties of the HEA coatings. In this paper, the HEA coatings of undoped(H 0),doped with CeO2(H 1),Y2O3(H 2),and CeO2+Y2O3(H3)were prepared by extremely high-speed laser cladding(EHLC).The effects of rare-earth biphasic particles and their synergistic effects on the microstructure and wear properties of the coatings were investigated. The results show that single CeO2/Y2O3doping can effectively improve the body-centered cubic(BCC)phase content and refine the grain structure of the coating, but when CeO2and Y2O3are co-doped,the BCC phase content of the coating can be improved more significantly, and the grain refinement is more obvious.Furthermore, the synergistic action of CeO2and Y2O3in the H₃coating resulted in a significant enhancement of the effects of solid solution strengthening, lattice distortion, and fine grain strengthening within the microstructure. This resulted in a substantial increase in the microhardness of the H3coating,reaching 970.36 HV,with a wear rate of merely 1.87×10−5mm3/(N·mm).In comparison with the H0,H1,and H2coatings,the hardness increased by 1.54 times,1.51 times, and 1.26 times, respectively.Concurrently, the wear rates decreased by 15.77%,12.83%,and 11.23%,respectively.The primary wear mechanisms observed in the coatings include abrasive wear, adhesive wear, and oxidative wear. 展开更多

As the demand for high-performance components in aerospace and other advanced industries continues to increase, the demand for composite structures that combine functionality, structural integrity, and superior performance increases. In this study, laser cladding deposition(LCD) was employed to fabricate a gradient structure based on a Ni-NbMoTa refractory high-entropy alloy(HEA),resulting in the development of a novel functionally graded material(FGM).An interlayer printing strategy was implemented to deposit Ni and NbMoTa alloys via distinct processing routes, enabling the construction of a three-dimensional gradient architecture. The resulting Ni-NbMoTa HEA FGMs exhibited no macroscopic or microscopic cracks within the gradient transition zone. The crystal structure consisted of a dual-phase solid solution comprising body-centered cubic(BCC) and face-centered cubic(FCC) phases. The average grain size and dendrite arm spacing in the transition zone were approximately 20 and 3 μm,respectively. The microhardness of the Ni-NbMoTa FGMs reached 584.5 ±39.3 HV,showing a clear correlation between hardness and Ni content.Compared with monolithic NbMoTa fabricated using LCD,the Ni-NbMoTa FGMs demonstrated significantly improved room-temperature mechanical properties, with compressive yield strength, ultimate compressive strength, and compressive strain reaching 1096 MPa,1445.4 MPa,and 18.2 %,respectively. These findings indicate that the addition of Ni effectively enhances the additive manufacturability of the Ni-NbMoTa gradient refractory HEA by promoting grain refinement and improving both strength and ductility. 展开更多

Titanium dioxide(TiO2)is an important photocatalytic material, yet its performance is limited by bottlenecks in conventional preparation methods, such as high interfacial resistance and low specific surface area.In this study,a method combining laser cladding with electrochemical dealloying was used to fabricate porous TiO2/Cu2O heterojunction photoanodes from a Cu–Ti precursor. This composite structure significantly enhances interfacial charge transfer, reduces the material bandgap by 0.92 eV,and extends the visible-light absorption edge to 544 nm.The optimized photoanode(porous TiO2@Cu77Ti23)has an ultrahigh electrochemically active surface area(1028 cm2·cm−2)while its photocurrent density is 77.1μA·cm−2,which is 14 times that of the control sample.Under a bias of 0.3 V,it achieves 79%degradation of methyl orange within 180 min, while retaining more than 90%of its initial activity after 10 cycles. This work provides a scalable new pathway for the preparation of efficient and stable solar-driven photoanodes. 展开更多

Conventional Fe-C alloy parts used in mechanical transmission and braking systems exposed to the external environment often suffer from wear and corrosion failures.Surface coating strengthening technologies have been explored to improve the surface performance and prolong service life of these parts.Among these technologies, laser cladding has shown promise in producing Fe-based alloy coatings with superior interfacial bonding properties to the Fe-C alloy substrate.Additionally, the microstructure of the Fe-based alloy coating is more uniform and the grain size is finer than that of surfacing welding, thermal spraying, and plasma cladding, and the oxide film of alloying elements on the coating surface can improve the coating performance.However,Fe-based alloy coatings produced by laser cladding typically exhibit lower hardness, lower wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and oxidation resistance compared to coatings based on Co and Ni alloys. Moreover, these coatings are susceptible to defects such as pores and cracks. To address these limitations, the incorporation of rare-earth oxides through doping in the laser cladding process has garnered significant attention. This approach has demonstrated substantial improvements in the microstructure and properties of Fe-based alloy coatings. This paper reviewed recent research on the structure and properties of laser-cladded Fe-based alloy coatings doped with various rare earth oxides, including La2O3,CeO2,and Y2O3.Specifically,it discussed the effects of rare earth oxides and their concentrations on the structure, hardness, friction, wear, corrosion, and oxidation characteristics of these coatings.Furthermore, the mechanisms by which rare earth oxides influence the coating’s structure and properties were summarized. This review aimed to serve as a valuable reference for the application and advancement of laser cladding technology for rare earth modified Fe-based alloy coatings. 展开更多

In order to enhance the wear resistance of 45 steel,a WC/Stellite 6 composite layer with 30%WC which with different morphologies(spherical and irregular)was prepared on the surface of 45 steel by laser cladding technology. The effects of WC morphology on the phase composition, microstructure, microhardness, and wear resistance of the cladding layer were compared and analyzed. The res-ults show that the surface of the cladding layer was well formed.M23C6,M7C3,WC,and W2C exist in both cladding layers. With the ad-dition of spherical WC,the diffraction peaks of γ-Co appear on the left side of the main peak of Co6W6C.The area of intergranular carbides accounts for a large proportion in the surface layer which with the fine grains.During the process of laser cladding the spherical WC particles with loose structure are prone to melting, including their interior. However, the melting amount of irregular WC particles is finite, which only occurs on the periphery of the particles, and the particle interior is relatively intact. The microhard-ness of two cladding layers gradient increases from the substrate to the surface layer. The surface layer added spherical WC has high-er microhardness, which reaches 790.6 HV1.Nevertheless,the wear resistance of the cladding layer added irregular WC is better than that of the cladding layer added spherical WC.The reason is because that the incompletely melted irregular WC particles are uni-formly distributed in the cladding layer which provided the support points for the cladding layer matrix during the wear process, the wear of the cladding layer by the grinding pair is reduced consequently. 展开更多

In order to enable efficient and cost-effective rehabilitation of surface-worn hydraulic supports, the synthesis and characterization of a novel Ti(N,B)/AISI431 composite coating formed on the surface of 27MnSi steel are explored via an exothermic in-situ reaction using the ultra-high speed laser cladding(EHLA in German)technique in combination with direct reaction synthesis(DRS).The aim is to mitigate the high residual stress and interfacial stress gradient in the remanufactured AISI431 coating on 27SiMn steel substrate and enhance surface wear resistance. The microstructure, phase composition and interface characteristics are carefully investigated.Much improved wear performance of the composite coating is revealed, mainly attributed to the in-situ formed Ti(N,B)precipitates, refined microstructure, broadened interface zone and reduced residual stress, benefited from the exothermic in-situ Ti(N,B)-reaction.The potential of combining ultra-high speed laser cladding with DRS is demonstrated to create coatings with tailored properties, providing valuable insights for developing advanced wear-resistant materials for industrial applications using EHLA. 展开更多

Co-based alloy coating was prepared on Zr alloy using laser melting and cladding technique to study the difference in the high-temperature oxidation behavior between pure metal Co coatings and Co-T800 alloy coatings,as well as the wear resistance of the coatings.Besides, the effect of changing the laser melting process on the coatings was also investigated. The oxidation mass gain at 800–1200℃and the high-temperature oxidation behavior during high-temperature treatment for 1 h of two coated Zr alloy samples were studied. Results show that the Co coating and the Co-T800 coating have better resistance against high-temperature oxidation. After oxidizing at 1000℃for 1 h,the thickness of the oxide layer of the uncoated sample was 241.0μm,whereas that of the sample with Co-based coating is only 11.8–35.5μm.The friction wear test shows that the depth of the abrasion mark of the coated sample is only 1/2 of that of the substrate, indicating that the hardness and wear resistance of the Zr substrate are greatly improved. The disadvantage of Co-based coatings is the inferior corrosion resistance in 3.5wt%NaCl solution. 展开更多

To solve the problems of deformation,micro-cracks,and residual tensile stress in laser cladding coatings, the technique of laser cladding with Fe-based memory alloy can be considered. However, the process of in-situ synthesis of Fe-based memory alloy coatings is extremely complex. At present, there is no clear guidance scheme for its preparation process, which limits its promotion and application to some extent. Therefore,in this study, response surface methodology(RSM)was used to model the response surface between the target values and the cladding process parameters. The NSGA-2 algorithm was employed to optimize the process parameters. The results indicate that the composite optimization method consisting of RSM and the NSGA-2 algorithm can establish a more accurate model, with an error of less than 4.5%between the predicted and actual values.Based on this established model, the optimal scheme for process parameters corresponding to different target results can be rapidly obtained. The prepared coating exhibits a uniform structure, with no defects such as pores, cracks, and deformation. The surface roughness and microhardness of the coating are enhanced, the shaping quality of the coating is effectively improved, and the electrochemical corrosion performance of the coating in 3.5%NaCl solution is obviously better than that of the substrate, providing an important guide for engineering applications. 展开更多

This work investigated tribological behavior and corrosion resistance of laser cladding(LC)Ti50Nb15V15Zr5Cr5Al10high-entropy alloy(HEA)coatings on Ti6Al4V substrates.Microstructural characterization illustrated that there was only body centered cubic phase in the HEA coating.Besides, the coatings of different laser power all exhibited obviously higher hardness than the substrate. It is illustrated that the microstructure of the HEA coatings is composed of body centered cubic phase, and the temperature gradient contributes to the distribution difference between the equiaxed and columnar grains.Meanwhile, the relationships between the tribological behavior, corrosion resistance and alloying elements have been illustrated. The HEA coating with 2200 W holds the best wear and corrosion resistance.During the friction process, there are many oxides formed at high temperatures, and adhesive wear contributes most to the wear mechanism of the coatings. The wear volumes of the HEA coatings are only 24.7%to 45.5%of that of the Ti6Al4V substrate.Due to the alloying elements like Cr and Al,there is dense passive film formed during the corrosion process, thereby leading to better corrosion resistance of the coatings. The corrosion rates of the HEA coatings with 2200 W and Ti6Al4V substrate are 5.34×10-3mm/a and 2.69×10-2mm/a,respectively. 展开更多

Laser cladding is a promising photon-based surface engineering technique broadly utilized for fabricating harder and wear resistant composite coatings. In spite of excellent properties, the practical applications of laser claddings are relatively restricted when compared with well-established coating techniques because of their inherent defects identified as cracks, pores and inclusions. Substantial evidence suggests that the incorporation of an appropriate amount of rare earth in laser claddings can remarkably prevent these defects. Additionally, the presence of rare earth in laser claddings can notably enhance tribo-mechanical properties such as surface hardness, modulus of elasticity, fracture toughness, friction coefficient and wear rate. In this literature review, the effect of rare earth in reducing dilution and cracks susceptibility of laser claddings in addition to microstructural refinement attained was examined. Mechanical and tribological properties of these claddings along with their underlying mechanism were discussed in detail. Finally, this article summarizes current applications of laser claddings based on rare earth and was concluded with future research directions. 展开更多

The crack-free Ni60 A coating was fabricated on 45 steel substrate by laser cladding and the microstructure including solidification characteristics, phases constitution and phase distribution was systematically investigated. The high temperature friction and wear behavior of the cladding coating and substrate sliding against GCr15 ball under different loads was systematically evaluated. It was found that the coating has homogenous and fine microstructure consisting of γ(Ni) solid solution, a considerable amount of network Ni-Ni3 B eutectics, m^23C6 with the floret-shape structure and Cr B with the dark spot-shape structure uniformly distributing in interdendritic eutectics. The microhardness of the coating is about 2.6 times as much as that of the substrate. The coating produces higher friction values than the substrate under the same load condition, but the friction process on the coating keeps relatively stable. Wear rates of the coating are about 1/6.2 of that of the substrate under the higher load(300 g). Wear mechanism of the substrate includes adhesion wear, abrasive wear, severe plastic deformation and oxidation wear, while that of the coating is merely a combination of mild abrasive wear and moderate oxidation wear. 展开更多

A Y2O3 particle enhanced Ni/TiC composite coating was fabricated in-situ on a TC4 Ti alloy by laser surface cladding. The phase component, microstructure, composition distribution and properties of the composite layer were investigated. The composite layer has graded microstructures and compositions, due to the fast melting followed by rapid solidification and cooling during laser cladding. The TiC powders are completely dissolved into the melted layer during melting and segregated as fine dendrites when solidified. The size of TiC dendrites decreases with increasing depth.Y2O3 fine particles distribute in the whole clad layer. The Y2O3 particle enhanced Ni/TiC composite layer has a quite uniform hardness along depth with a maximum value of HV1380,which is 4 times higher than the initial hardness. The wear resistance of the Ti alloy is significantly improved after laser cladding due to the high hardness of the composite coating. 展开更多

The effects of Y2O3 on the microstructure, microhardness, wear resistance, high-temperature oxidation resistance, hot corrosion resistance, and electrochemical corrosion behaviour of CoCrFeNiTiNb high entropy alloy coatings formed on Ti-6Al-4V alloy surfaces were studied. The results show that the addition of Y2O3 changes the proportion of the phase but does not change its type. The average grain size is only 1/4.7 of that of the high entropy alloy(HEA) coating, and the fine-grained strengthening leads to increases in the microhardness and wear resistance of 21.8% and 26.9%, respectively. The addition of Y2O3 enhances the denseness and bonding properties of the oxide and corrosion product layers, reducing the oxidation and hot corrosion rates by 60.3% and 40.3%, respectively. The addition of Y2O3 doubles the corrosion resistance which is attributed to the refinement of the grains, the increased proportion of HCP and TiN, and the weakening of galvanic coupling corrosion. 展开更多

Laser cladding deposited Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy universally shows more complex microstructures, each of which has significant effect on mechanical properties.Of particularα/βinterface phase has been observed in this paper under certain conditions. It demonstrates that the influence of theα/βinterface phase on the tensile properties is closely associated with dislocations and twin substructure through comparison experiments. The results show that theα/βinterface phase hinders dislocation motion and decreases effective slip length. In addition, the twin substructure has been activated in theα/βinterface phase during tensile process and has acted somehow like grain boundaries. Therefore, the strength and the work-hardening rate of the laser cladding deposited Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy have been significantly improved due to the dynamic Hall-Petch effect.Besides,theα/βinterface phase leads to more uniform dislocations distribution, which implies that relative lower local concentrated stress will be produced along theα/βinterface phase or colony boundary after the same amount of plastic deformation. Moreover, the twinning-induced plasticity effects in theα/βinterface phase further increase the plastic deformation capacity. These results in higher elongation for the laser cladding deposited Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy. It can be concluded that the current work suggests an effective method to simultaneously improve the strength and plasticity of laser cladding deposited Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy based on theα/βinterface phase. 展开更多

High-entropy alloy layer up to 150 lm in thickness was formed on H13 substrate with a metallurgical bonding at the coating/substrate interface. Simple solid solution phases were formed in the coating layer with a typical microstructure composed of both dendrite and interdendrite. The microstructure at the top of the cladding zone consists of equiaxed grains while that at the bottom consists of columnar grains. The coating layer exhibits great enhancement in microhardness and wear resistance compared with the H13 substrate. 展开更多
