The rock mass consists of rock blocks and structural planes,which can reduce its integrity and strength.Therefore,accurately obtaining the characteristics of the rock mass structural plane is a prerequisite for evaluating stability and designing supports in underground engineering.Currently,there are no effective testing methods for the characteristic parameters of the rock mass structural plane in underground engineering.The paper presents the digital drilling technology as a new testing method of rock mass structural planes.Flawed rock specimens with cracks of varying widths and angles were used to simulate the rock mass structural planes,and the multifunctional rock mass digital drilling test system was employed to carry out the digital drilling tests.The analysis focuses on the variation laws of drilling parameters,such as drilling pressure and drilling torque,affected by the characteristics of prefabricated cracks,and clarifies the degradation mechanism of rock equivalent compressive strength.Additionally,an identification model for the characteristic parameters of rock mass structural planes during drilling is established.The test results indicate that the average difference of the characteristics of prefabricated cracks identified by the equivalent compressive strength is 2.45°and 0.82 mm,respectively.The identification model while drilling is verified to be correct due to the high identification accuracy.Based on this,a method for testing the characteristic parameters of the surrounding rock structural plane while drilling is proposed.The research offers a theoretical and methodological foundation for precise in situ identification of structural planes of the surrounding rock in underground engineering. 展开更多

For a homogeneous,continuous,and isotropic material whose constitutive relationships meets with the Ramberg-Osgood law(R-O law),the energy in the elastoplastic indentation with a ball indenter was theoretically analyzed,and the proportional superposition of energy in pure elasticity and pure plasticity during indentation was considered based on the equivalence of energy density.Subsequently,a Proportional Superposition-based Elasto Plastic Model(PS-EPM)was developed to describe the relationships between the displacement and the load during the ball indentation.Furthermore,a new test method of Ball Indentation based on Elastoplastic Proportional Superposition(BI-EPS)was developed to obtain the constitutive relationships of R-O law materials.The load–displacement curves predicted using the PS-EPM model were found to agree closely with the Finite Element Analysis(FEA)results.Moreover,the stress vs.strain curves predicted using the BI-EPS method were in better agreement with those obtained by FEA.Additionally,ball indentation was performed on eleven types of metal materials including five types of aluminum alloys and six types of steel.The test results showed that the stress vs.strain relationships and the tensile strength values predicted using the proposed BI-EPS method agreed well with the results obtained using conventional uniaxial tensile tests. 展开更多

This paper is a review of the past research of mechanical testing methods for natural fibre honeycomb sandwich structure as well as failure modes analysis at a microscopic level by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). As the world is garnering attention towards renewable resources for environmental purposes, studies of natural fibre have been increasing as well as the application of natural fibre throughout various industries such as aerospace, automobiles, and construction sectors. This paper is started with brief information regarding the honeycomb sandwich structure, introduction to natural fibre, its applications as well as the factors affecting the performances of the structure. Next, the mechanical testing methods are listed out as well as the expected outcomes obtained from the respective testing. The mechanical properties are also identified by conducting lab tests according to the ASTM standard for sandwich and core structures. The microstructure of the deformed samples is then examined under Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) by using different magnifications to study the failure mechanisms of the samples. The images obtained from the SEM test are analyzed by using fractography which will show the failure modes of the samples. Hydropower projects are rapidly developing in China at present, and a number of high daras and large reservoirs are currently under construction or will soon be built. These large projects are mainly located on the great rivers in West China with complicated topographical and geological conditions. Evaluation of stability and safety of these high dam projects is an important topic. Geomechanical model test is one of the main methods to study the global stability of high dam and foundation. In this paper, a comprehensive testing method that combines overloading and strength reduction in a model is proposed. In this method, both the influence of excessive flooding and the effects of strength reduction of rock masses and weak structural planes on dam stability are considered. Thus, the comprehensive testing method can accurately incorporate multiple factors that affect the global stability of high dam and its foundation. Based on the failure testing principle and model similarity theory, a similarity relation formula for safety evaluation through comprehensive test is established. A new model material, temperature-dependent analogous material, is also developed. By rising the temperature and reducing the strength of the mod,~l material, the mechanical behaviors resulting from gradual strength reduction can be simulated. Thus, the comprehensive testing method is realized in a single model. For case studies, the comprehensive geomechanical model test is conducted for Jinpinlg I and Xiaowan high arch dam projects. 展开更多

In order to achieve higher density of P/M steels using the die wall lubrication compacting method or powder lubricant in warm compaction process, the influence of different process parameters on the green density of warm compacted samples was studied. According to the orthogonal test method, the authors systematically study the influence of the different compaction pressure, condition of lubrication and compaction temperature on the green density of the sample in the warm compaction process, and put forward the optimal process parameter of warm compaction experiment. It is found that, a high compaction pressure (≥700 MPa), die wall lubrication combined with a small amount of internal lubricants, and fitting compaction temperature by different condition of lubrication, are the optimal parameters in warm compaction process. 展开更多

The uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of rocks is a vital geomechanical parameter widely used for rock mass classification,stability analysis,and engineering design in rock engineering.Various UCS testing methods and apparatuses have been proposed over the past few decades.The objective of the present study is to summarize the status and development in theories,test apparatuses,data processing of the existing testing methods for UCS measurement.It starts with elaborating the theories of these test methods.Then the test apparatus and development trends for UCS measurement are summarized,followed by a discussion on rock specimens for test apparatus,and data processing methods.Next,the method selection for UCS measurement is recommended.It reveals that the rock failure mechanism in the UCS testing methods can be divided into compression-shear,compression-tension,composite failure mode,and no obvious failure mode.The trends of these apparatuses are towards automation,digitization,precision,and multi-modal test.Two size correction methods are commonly used.One is to develop empirical correlation between the measured indices and the specimen size.The other is to use a standard specimen to calculate the size correction factor.Three to five input parameters are commonly utilized in soft computation models to predict the UCS of rocks.The selection of the test methods for the UCS measurement can be carried out according to the testing scenario and the specimen size.The engineers can gain a comprehensive understanding of the UCS testing methods and its potential developments in various rock engineering endeavors. 展开更多

Mixed-mode I-II crack-based fatigue crack propagation(FCPⅠ-Ⅱ)usually occurs in engineering structures;however,no theoretical formula or effective compliance test methods have been established for FCPI-IIto date.For mixed-mode I-II flawed components,based on the principle of mean-value energy equivalence,we propose a theoretical method to describe the relationship between material elastic parameters,geometrical dimensions,load(or displacement),and energy.Based on the maximum circumferential stress criterion,we propose a uniform compliance model for compact tensile shear(CTS)specimens with horizontal cracks deflecting and propagating(flat-folding propagation)under different loading angles,geometries,and materials.Along with an innovative design of the fixture of CTS specimens used for FCPI-IItests,we develop a new compliancebased testing method for FCPⅠ-Ⅱ.For the 30Cr2Ni4MoV rotor steel,the FCP rates of modeⅠ,modeⅡ,and mixed-modeⅠ-Ⅱcracks were obtained via FCP tests using compact tension,Arcan,and CTS specimens,respectively.The obtained da/d N versusΔJ curves of the FCP rates are close.The loading angleαand dimensionless initial crack length a0/W demonstrated negligible effects on the FCP rates.Hence,the FCP rates of mode I crack can be used to predict the residual life of structural crack propagation. 展开更多

An analytical model for contact area and contact stress considering the loading history in incremental sheet forming(ISF)was established.Then,by integrating with the directional characteristics of friction force and horizontal force in the process,a friction test method reflecting the forming characteristics of ISF was proposed.Friction coefficients during the forming processes of parts with different wall angles were measured under various plane curves,process paths,and lubrication conditions.Furthermore,the accuracy of the analytical model,as well as the measured friction coefficients and their variation trends,was verified through comparative analysis with experimental results,simulation data,and outcomes from other existing models.The results indicate that the influence of the plane curve characteristics and process paths of parts on the friction condition is not significant.Under the lubrication conditions of L-HM46 oil,MoS2grease,graphite powder,and dry friction,the friction coefficient shows a gradually increasing trend.Notably,when the wall angle is≤40°,the friction coefficient remains relatively constant;however,when the wall angle exceeds 40°,the friction coefficient increases progressively. 展开更多

Drill-and-blast excavation design requires a comprehensive understanding of the strength properties of the surrounding rock mass in the blast area.However,due to the absence of reliable methods for determining rock strength in situ,blast designs commonly rely on laboratory test results derived from limited core samples.To address this limitation,this study proposes a novel method for estimating in situ rock compressive and tensile strengths using drilling monitoring data.Drilling monitoring is a technique that interprets the properties of the drilled medium through recorded drilling parameters.A rotary-percussive drilling test system was developed for this purpose,incorporating an actual rotary-percussive drill from a blasthole drill rig along with integrated monitoring systems.Importantly,a complete procedure for acquiring five key drilling parameters,including thrust force,rotation speed,torque,drilling rate,and percussive pressure are described.These parameters were used to calculate the drilling work done,defined as the energy required to excavate a unit volume of rock.The results indicate a nonlinear correlation between drilling work done and percussive pressure,which corresponds to the compressive and tensile strengths of the tested rocks.Furthermore,applying confining stress to rock samples was found to increase the drilling work done,reflecting a higher energy demand for drilling under confined conditions.This observation is consistent with rock mechanics principles,wherein rock strength increases under confining pressure.Thus,this study demonstrates that drilling monitoring tests can effectively indicate rock strength under in situ stress conditions.The findings offer practical implications for real-time in situ rock strength assessment,thereby bridging the gap between drilling monitoring research and rock mechanics applications. 展开更多

This paper presents a group of full-scale test results of cast-in-situ pile and pre-bored grouted prestressed high-strength concrete(PHC)pile(bored PHC pile)in deep soft soils.The pile shaft of castin-situ pile was arranged with strain sensors,and the bored PHC pile was arranged with both strain sensors and fiberoptic sensors.The side and base resistances of bored PHC pile and cast-in-situ pile were analyzed according to the fieldtest results.The research results showed that the 900 mmdiameter bored PHC pile revealed better compressive capacity compared to 1000 mm-diameter cast-insitu pile.The side resistance of bored PHC pile was also greater than that of cast-in-situ pile due to the existence of grout body.The expanding base grout body of bored PHC pile also improved its base resistance,as the base grouting process could increase base area and improve the properties of soil around pile base as well.The fieldtest results are valuable for the application of bored PHC pile and castin-situ pile in engineering practice. 展开更多
