Coupled atmosphere-ocean data assimilation for enhanced medium-range prediction of the North Atlantic Oscillation 认领 引用

Accurate prediction of the North Atlantic Oscillation(NAO)is of significant societal importance,yet it is hindered by a“weather-climate prediction gap”on the intermediate timescales that bridge these two forecasts.This gap arises because predictability on this timescale is neither primarily determined by atmospheric initial conditions nor fully controlled by slowly evolving boundary forcings like the ocean;instead,it critically depends on the precise capture of ocean-atmosphere coupling processes.Currently,the Earth System Models(ESMs)predominantly use uncoupled data assimilation(UDA)methods,which can trigger“initialization shocks”characterized by dynamical imbalances that degrade forecast accuracy.To address this limitation,this study utilizes a nudging-based weakly coupled data assimilation(WCDA)method to improve 15-day medium-range NAO prediction through the generation of more physically coherent initial fields.Experiments are conducted within the CESM-iCTF model,a modification of the Community Earth System Model(CESM)developed by our previous work that incorporates an artificial intelligence-based convective trigger function(AI-CTF)to better simulate critical airsea interactions.Contrasting WCDA initialization with traditional UDA,our results demonstrate that WCDA reduces the 15-day NAO forecast error by 8%compared to atmosphere-only assimilation(ADA)and by 30%relative to ocean-only assimilation(ODA).Notably,WCDA forecast closely approaches the performance of the ECMWF operational system while consistently surpassing the uncoupled NCEP and UKMO forecasts.This superior performance stems from the fact that WCDA creates a physically coherent and balanced initial state,which mitigates initialization shock from air-sea inconsistencies and effectively suppresses error growth,thereby translating initial-state advantages into sustained forecast skill.We further find a positive correlation between the relative improvement of WCDA over ADA and NAO event duration,attributed to the persistent feedback provided by sea surface temperatures to the atmosphere via sensible and latent heat fluxes.Furthermore,sensitivity experiments reveal a clear temporal hand-off of predictability.During the period of 1–10 days,predictability is governed primarily by the initial atmospheric dynamical and thermal state(wind fields,temperature,and surface pressure),which is essential for suppressing nonlinear error growth in the NAO's key dipole regions.During 11–15 days,predictability becomes critically dependent on the slowly evolving ocean temperature,which acts to mitigate the amplification of error as it propagates downstream.These findings highlight the essential role of generating physically coherent coupled initial states for weather-climate prediction and offer clear scientific guidance for advancing next-generation forecast systems and optimizing future observational networks. 展开更多

Accurate and interpretable prediction of shield tunnel-induced settlement poses a significant challenge due to the complex interplay of various influencing factors.This paper proposes a novel interpretable hybrid model that combines complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise(CEEMDAN),slime mold algorithm(SMA),and least squares support vector machine(LSSVM)to enhance prediction accuracy and model transparency.The CEEMDAN method,optimized by SMA,decomposes settlement data into intrinsic mode functions(IMFs)and residuals,thereby reducing data noise.The LSSVM,also optimized by SMA,is then applied to predict each IMF and residual.The final settlement prediction is derived from the aggregation of these results.The model was rigorously validated using the Changsha(China)and Singapore Metro projects,demonstrating superior performance to traditional machine learning models.The evaluation metrics,including root mean square error(RMSE),mean absolute error(MAE),mean absolute percentage error(MAPE),and coefficient of determination(R2),underscore the model's effectiveness.The model achieved the lowest error rates and highest accuracy across these metrics.Notably,Shapley additive explanations(SHAP)provided insights into the model's decision-making process,identifying shield stoppage and moisture content as the most influential factors in settlement prediction.This study contributes to the advancement of the methodological framework for predicting tunnel settlement.It addresses the discrepancy between prediction accuracy and interpretability,providing a robust tool for practical engineering applications. 展开更多

Reservoir landslides pose significant risks to hydropower projects,potentially leading to catastrophic disasters that threaten downstream lives and properties.Landslide susceptibility assessments are critical for effective regional disaster prevention and mitigation.However,the complexity,model uninterpretability,and data scarcity related to reservoir landslides,particularly when adapting models across diverse geographic regions,present significant challenges.This study proposes an interpretable Deep Transfer Learning model coupled with multi-source data and Physical methods(DTLP).The model is trained on multi-source data from the Three Gorges Reservoir Area(TGRA)and Lower Jinsha River Basin(LJRB),tested in Baihetan Reservoir Area(BHT),addressing the issues of limited data and cross-regional generalization.The physical method captures the effect of dynamic water level changes on slope stability.SHAP values are used to interpret the model,providing clear insights into its internal mechanisms.Results demonstrate that DTLP outperforms TrAdaBoost in data-scarce regions,achieving higher accuracy(AUC=0.953,Accuracy=0.941)with better feature generalization and susceptibility zone identification.Incorporating dynamic water level changes into the physical model enhances identification of high-susceptibility areas and reduces misclassifications.SHAP analysis indicates that elevation,lithology,and distance to river significantly influence the model decisions.Using TGRA as the source domain further validates the superiority of DTLP framework.However,due to the initial discrepancies between TGRA and the target domain,the transferability is constrained to some extent,resulting in models trained on LJRB data outperforming those trained on TGRA data. 展开更多

This paper investigates the potential of Vision-Language Models(VLMs)to enhance Human–Vehicle Interaction(HVI)in Autonomous Driving(AD)scenarios,particularly in interactions between vehicles and other traffic participants,with a focus on rationality and safety in external HVI.Leveraging recent advancements in large language models,VLMs demonstrate remarkable capabilities in understanding real-world contexts and generating significant interest in HVI applications.This paper provides an overview of AD,HVI,and VLMs,along with the historical context of large language model applications in HVI.The HVI discussed herein involves dynamic game processes encompassing perception and decision-making between vehicles and traffic participants,such as pedestrians.Furthermore,we examine the perceptual challenges associated with applying VLMs to HVI and compile relevant datasets.This research fills a gap in the existing literature by systematically analyzing the current status,challenges,and future opportunities of VLM applications in HVI.To advance VLM integration in AD,various implementation strategies are discussed.The findings highlight the potential of VLMs to transform HVI in AD,improving both passenger experience and driving safety.Overall,this study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of VLM applications in HVI and provides insights to guide future research and development. 展开更多

Evaluation of compressive strength in underground lining structures is critical for ensuring structural integrity and safety.Traditional assessment methods are often destructive,time-consuming,and impractical in confined environments such as tunnels and utility corridors.This study introduces an automated,nondestructive approach to visualize and estimate the compressive strength of underground concrete lining using hyperspectral imaging(HSI)combined with deep neural network(DNN)models.High-dimensional spectral data of concrete lining are assembled and trained to develop two DNN-based regression models,namely the Mono-Spectrum Deep Neural Regressor(MS-DNR)and the Segmented-Spectrum Deep Neural Regressor(SegS_DNR).Utilizing the SegS_DNR model,two-dimensional(2D)compressive strength distribution heatmaps were generated for visualization and assessment of strength variations.The SegS_DNR model demonstrated excellent predictive performance,achieving a coefficient of determination(Rp²)of 0.925 and a Residual Prediction Deviation(RPD)of 5.28 on the testing set for compressive strength estimation.The idea is further validated in site by investigating the capability of identifying the defect regions of the tunnel concrete lining,namely the cracked,spalling,and leaking areas,and demonstrated promising performance in comparison with experienced inspectors on site.This approach offers a contact-free technique for automated structural health monitoring,contributing to safer and more sustainable underground maintenance practices. 展开更多

Objective:The presence of complex components in Chinese herbal medicine(CHM)hinders identification of the primary active substances and understanding of pharmacological principles.This study was aimed at developing a big-data-based,knowledgedriven in silico algorithm for predicting central components in complex CHM formulas.Methods:Network pharmacology(TCMSP)and clinical(GEO)databases were searched to retrieve gene targets corresponding to the formula ingredients,herbal components,and specific disease being treated.Intersections were determined to obtain diseasespecific core targets,which underwent further GO and KEGG enrichment analyses to generate non-redundant biological processes and molecular targets for the formula and each component.The ratios of the numbers of biological and molecular events associated with a component were calculated with a formula,and entropy weighting was performed to obtain a fitting score to facilitate ranking and improve identification of the key components.The established method was tested on the traditional CHM formula Danggui Sini Decoction(DSD)for gastric cancer.Finally,the effects of the predicted critical component were experimentally validated in gastric cancer cells.Results:An algorithm called Chinese Herb Medicine-Formula vs.Ingredients Efficacy Fitting&Prediction(CHM-FIEFP)was developed.Ferulic acid was identified as having the highest fitting score among all tested DSD components.The pharmacological effects of ferulic acid alone were similar to those of DSD.Conclusions:CHM-FIEFP is a promising in silico method for identifying pharmacological components of CHM formulas with activity against specific diseases.This approach may also be practical for solving other similarly complex problems.The algorithm is available at http://gffzzd7c80970c9ab422fh00qq50pvbxpf6ffv.ffgz.tsg.suse.edu.cn/. 展开更多

Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR) presents a promising approach for harnessing renewable energy and converting greenhouse gas (CO2) into high value-added CO products.N-doped single atom (SA) and atomic-level metal nanocluster (MN) tandem catalysts with rich defects for eCO2RR are reported,which achieved a maximum CO Faraday efficiency (FECO) of 97.7%(-0.7 V vs.RHE) in the H-type cell and maintained over 95% FECOat potentials from -0.18 to -0.73 V vs.RHE in the flow cell.Furthermore,the catalyst in the flow cell demonstrated a remarkably low onset potential of-0.14 V vs.RHE and the current density was approximately three times that of the H-type cell.Interestingly,XPS analysis indicates that carbon substrates containing defects have more pyridine-N content.DFT calculations and in-situ attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared support this finding by showing that the Ni-(N-C2)3 active sites with defect favors preferentially convert CO2-to-CO. 展开更多

The passive radiative cooling technology shows a great potential application on reducing the enormous global energy consumption.The multilayer metamaterials could enhance the radiative cooling performance.However,it is a challenge to design the radiative cooler.In this work,based on the particle swarm optimization(PSO)evolutionary algorithm,we develop an intelligent workflow in designing photonic radiative cooling metamaterials.Specifically,we design two 10-layer SiO2 radiative coolers doped by cylindrical MgF2 or air impurities,possessing high emissivity within the selective(8–13μm)and broadband(8–25μm)atmospheric transparency windows,respectively.Our two kinds of coolers demonstrate power density as high as 119 W/m2 and 132 W/m2 at the room temperature(300 K).Our scheme does not rely on the usage of special materials,forming high-performing metamaterials with conventional poor-performing components.This significant improvement of the emission spectra proves the effectiveness of our inverse design algorithm in boosting the discovery of high-performing functional metamaterials. 展开更多

In this paper,we study a distributed model to cooperatively compute variational inequalities over time-varying directed graphs.Here,each agent has access to a part of the full mapping and holds a local view of the global set constraint.By virtue of an auxiliary vector to compensate the graph imbalance,we propose a consensus-based distributed projection algorithm relying on local computation and communication at each agent.We show the convergence of this algorithm over uniformly jointly strongly connected unbalanced digraphs with nonidentical local constraints.We also provide a numerical example to illustrate the effectiveness of our algorithm. 展开更多

This article concentrate on optimized adaptive consensus control problem for the nonlinear multi-agent systems subjected to deception attacks. To mitigate the influence of false data on the system, the transformed tracking error is formulated under the backstepping technique, and the optimized consensus control strategy incorporating Nussbaum technique is utilized to eliminate the destabilizing effects of time-varying gains in the attack. The proposed critic-actor structured reinforcement learning optimal algorithm executes control actions via the actor neural network and evaluates system performance through the critic neural network, enabling the closed-loop system to achieve optimized tracking control performance. Based on the Lyapunov stability method, it is demonstrated that all signals bounded within the closed-loop system, ensuring the achievement of asymptotic output consensus. To illustrate the efficacy of the proposed control approach, some simulation results are finally presented. 展开更多

In the context of current global warming,understanding urban thermal resilience(UTR)dynamics across dif-ferent climatic zones is crucial.This study aims to examine the complex interactions among urban morphology,green-blue infrastructure,and climate factors affecting UTR.Moving beyond traditional methods that compare urban and rural thermal differences,our research innovatively measures UTR by evaluating urban disturbances caused by extreme thermal events.To improve accuracy and reliability,we utilize an AI-powered Monte Carlo Simulation framework.Our findings emphasize the critical role of blue-green spaces in boosting UTR,whereas urban morphology often has a suppressive impact.Additionally,atmospheric humidity is identified as a critical factor affecting UTR.The study interestingly finds varied climatic responses:dense urban areas enhance resilience in arid and cold regions but reduce it in tropical and temperate zones.These findings highlight the need for a balance between sustainable urban living and infrastructure development. 展开更多

This paper investigates the robust flocking problem for second-order nonlinear systems with a leader and external disturbances.In contrast with most of second-order systems in the literature,the intrinsic dynamics here are nonlinear and non-identical that depend not only on the velocity but also on the position,which is more realistic.Moreover,the interaction topology is undirected and switching.Provided that the leader’s velocity may be constant or time-varying,two distributed flocking control laws have been proposed for two cases to make the differences of the velocities between all followers and the leader approach to zero asymptotically.The proposed distributed flocking control laws are both model-independent which results in the effectiveness of the controllers to cope with the different intrinsic dynamics of the followers and the leader under some assumptions on boundedness of several states.An example is given to illustrate the validity of the theoretical results. 展开更多

As a noninvasive technique,ultrasound stimulation is known to modulate neuronal activity both in vitro and in vivo.The latest explanation of this phenomenon is that the acoustic wave can activate the ion channels and further impact the electrophysiological properties of targeted neurons.However,the underlying mechanism of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound(LIPUS)-induced neuro-modulation effects is still unclear.Here,we characterize the excitatory effects of LIPUS on spontaneous activity and the intracellular Ca2+homeostasis in cultured hippocampal neurons.By whole-cell patch clamp recording,we found that 15 min of 1-MHz LIPUS boosts the frequency of both spontaneous action potentials and spontaneous excitatory synaptic currents(sEPSCs)and also increases the amplitude of sEPSCs in hippocampal neurons.This phenomenon lasts for>10 min after LIPUS exposure.Together with Ca2+imaging,we clarified that LIPUS increases the[Ca2+]cyto level by facilitating L-type Ca2+channels(LTCCs).In addition,due to the[Ca2+]cyto elevation by LIPUS exposure,the Ca2+-dependent CaMKII-CREB pathway can be activated within 30 min to further regulate the gene transcription and protein expression.Our work suggests that LIPUS regulates neuronal activity in a Ca2+-dependent manner via LTCCs.This may also explain the multi-activation effects of LIPUS beyond neurons.LIPUS stimulation potentiates spontaneous neuronal activity by increasing Ca2+influx. 展开更多

Weighted vertex cover(WVC)is one of the most important combinatorial optimization problems.In this paper,we provide a new game optimization to achieve efficiency and time of solutions for the WVC problem of weighted networks.We first model the WVC problem as a general game on weighted networks.Under the framework of a game,we newly define several cover states to describe the WVC problem.Moreover,we reveal the relationship among these cover states of the weighted network and the strict Nash equilibriums(SNEs)of the game.Then,we propose a game-based asynchronous algorithm(GAA),which can theoretically guarantee that all cover states of vertices converging in an SNE with polynomial time.Subsequently,we improve the GAA by adding 2-hop and 3-hop adjustment mechanisms,termed the improved game-based asynchronous algorithm(IGAA),in which we prove that it can obtain a better solution to the WVC problem than using a the GAA.Finally,numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed IGAA can obtain a better approximate solution in promising computation time compared with the existing representative algorithms. 展开更多

Cyber-physical systems(CPSs)have emerged as an essential area of research in the last decade,providing a new paradigm for the integration of computational and physical units in modern control systems.Remote state estimation(RSE)is an indispensable functional module of CPSs.Recently,it has been demonstrated that malicious agents can manipulate data packets transmitted through unreliable channels of RSE,leading to severe estimation performance degradation.This paper aims to present an overview of recent advances in cyber-attacks and defensive countermeasures,with a specific focus on integrity attacks against RSE.Firstly,two representative frameworks for the synthesis of optimal deception attacks with various performance metrics and stealthiness constraints are discussed,which provide a deeper insight into the vulnerabilities of RSE.Secondly,a detailed review of typical attack detection and resilient estimation algorithms is included,illustrating the latest defensive measures safeguarding RSE from adversaries.Thirdly,some prevalent attacks impairing the confidentiality and data availability of RSE are examined from both attackers'and defenders'perspectives.Finally,several challenges and open problems are presented to inspire further exploration and future research in this field. 展开更多

The directional design of functional materials with multi-objective constraints is a big challenge,in which performance and stability are determined by a complicated interconnection of different physical factors.We apply multi-objective optimization,based on the Pareto Efficiency and Particle-Swarm Optimization methods,to design new functional materials directionally.As a demonstration,we achieve the thermoelectric design of 2D SnSe materials via the above methods.We identify several novel metastable 2D SnSe structures with simultaneously lower free energy and better thermoelectric performance in their experimentally reported monolayer structures.We hope that the results of our work on the multi-objective Pareto Optimization method will represent a step forward in the integrative design of future multi-objective and multi-functional materials. 展开更多
