We have presented a three dimensional optical protein chip that fulfills the demanding for point-of-care diagnostics in terms of ease-of-use (one step assay), miniaturization (5 μl). The artful combination of magnetic nanoparticles on chip and total internal reflection imaging (TIRI) technology permits the sensitive and rapid detection of hs-CRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein). The whole test was complete within 10 min using “all in one step” assay with a limit of detection of 0.1 ng/mL hs-CRP. The measuring range for hs-CRP could be extended to 10 ng/mL. The chip can also be used to detect more parameters in blood samples. 展开更多

Aligned porous SnO2 nanofibers are obtained by electrospinning with the collector of parallel wedge-shaped electrodes and then by oxygen plasma treatment and annealing.The morphology and crystal structure of the fibers are analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction,and the effects of the morphology and alignment on ethanol sensing properties of the fibers are investigated.The results show that the porous SnO2 fibers with an average diameter of tens of nanometers can be deposited orderly on the micro-hotplate with the auxiliary electrodes.The aligned porous fibers exhibit higher sensitivity and faster response compared with randomly oriented ones at the operating temperature of 300℃. 展开更多

This paper presents the design, fabrication, and preliminary experimental result of an electric field microsensor based on the structure of piezoelectric interdigitated cantilevers with staggered vertical vibration mode. The working principle of this electric field microsensor is demonstrated, and the induced charges and structural parameters of this microsensor are simulated by the finite element method. The electric field microsensor was fabricated by Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems(MEMS) technique. Each cantilever is a multilayer compound structure(Al/Si3N4/ Pt/PZT/Pt/ Ti/SiO 2/Si), and Piezoelectric, PieZ oelectric ceramic Transducer(PZT)(PbZ rxTi(1–x)O3) layer, prepared by sol-gel method, is used as the piezoelectric material to drive the cantilevers vibrating. This electric field microsensor was tested under the DC electric field with the field intensity from 0 to 5×104 V/m. The output voltage signal of the electric field microsensor has a good linear relationship to the intensity of applied electric field. The performance could be improved with the optimized design of structure, and reformative fabrication processes of PZT material. 展开更多

The subsecond, temporal, vesicular exocytosis is ubiquitous, but difficult detecting in communication mechanisms of cells. A microelectrode array (MEA), fabricated by MEMS technology, was applied successfully for real-time monitoring of quantal exocytosis from single pheochromocytoma (PC12) cell, The developed MEA was evaluated by dopamine (DA) using electrochemical methods and the results revealed that the sensitivity of DA was improved to 12659.24 p.A L mmol 1 cm 2. The modified MEA was used to detect in vitro vesicular exocytosis of DA from single PCI 2 cells stimulated by concentrated 100 mmol L-1 K+ cell solution. A total of 592 spikes were measured and analyzed by three parameters and the statistical results revealed the population of each parameter was an approximate Gaussian distribution, and on average, 1.31 × 106 ± 9.25× 104 oxidizable molecules were released in each quantal exocytosis. In addition, results also indicate that a single PC12 cell probably releases the spikes with T ranging from 25.6 ms to 35.4 ms corresponding to/max ranging from 45.6 pA to 65.2 pA. The devices, including a homemade computer interface and the MEA modified with polymer film, provides a new means for further research on the neural, intercellular, communication mechanism. 展开更多

A localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPR) biosensor was prepared with gold nanospheres(Au NSs) coated on the tip face of the optical silica fiber. Au NSs with the sizes of 20 nm and 80 nm were used. The sensitivities of Au NS_(20 nm) and Au NS_(80 nm) modified sensors to bulk refractive index(RI) variation are 82.86 nm/RIU and 218.98 nm/RIU, respectively. The Au NS_(80 nm) modified sensor was used for the detection of 40 bases DNA hybridization and the limit of detection is 50 nmol/L, where the 40-bases DNA probe was covalently linked with Au NS_(80 nm). The complementary DNA sequence in tris-acetate-EDTA(TAE) buffer solution was detected as the target DNA. This fiber sensor has the advantages of small sample consumption, easy fabrication and high sensitivity. 展开更多

This paper presents a surface plasmon resonance(SPR) imaging system based on angular modulation(AM) and intensity measurement(IM) together to avoid the mechanical errors of the angle scanning device. The SPR resonant angle was found by angular scanning method and then the light intensity changes were collected at a fixed incident angle. Glycerol gradient solution(0%, 1%, 2%, 3%(weight percentage) glycerol dissolved in water) experiments were conducted, which indicate that the best fixed angle location is the middle of the linear range of SPR absorption peak and the central area signals are more uniform than those of the border areas. The sensitivity differences of different areas of SPR images are studied, and an optimized algorithm is developed. 展开更多

A facile surface plasmon resonance(SPR) chip is developed for small molecule determination and analysis. The SPR chip was prepared based on a self assembling principle, in which the modified bovine serum albumin(BSA) was directly self-assembled onto the bare gold surface. The surface morphology of the chip with the modified BSA was investigated by atomic force microscopy(AFM) and its optical properties were characterized. The surface binding capacity of the bare facile SPR chip with a uniform morphology is 8 times of that of the bare control SPR chip. Based on the experiments of immune reaction between cortisol antibody and cortisol derivative, the sensitivity of the facile SPR chip with the modified BSA is much higher than that of the control SPR chip with the un-modified BSA. The facile SPR chip has been successfully used to detect small molecules. The lowest detection limit is 5 ng/m L with a linear range of 5—100 ng/m L for cortisol analysis. The novel facile SPR chip can also be applied to detect other small molecules. 展开更多

A novel thermal-assisted ultra-violet(UV) photocatalysis digestion method for the determination of total phosphorus(TP) in water samples was introduced in this work. The photocatalytic experiments for TP digestion were conducted using a 365 nm wavelength UV light and Ti O2 particles as the photocatalyst. Sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium glycerophosphate were used as the typical components of TP and the digested samples were then determined by spectrophotometry after phosphomolybdenum blue reaction. The effects of operational parameters such as reaction time and temperature were studied for the digestion of TP and the kinetic analysis of two typical components was performed in this paper. The pseudo-first-order rate constants k of two phosphorus compounds at different temperatures were obtained and the Arrhenius equation was employed to explain the effect of temperature on rate constant k. Compared with the conventional thermal digestion method for TP detection, it was found that the temperature was decreased from 120 °C to 60 °C with same conversion rate and time in this thermal-assisted UV digestion method, which enabled the digestion process work at normal pressure. Compared with the individual ultra-violet(UV) photocatalysis process, the digestion time was also decreased from several hours to half an hour using the thermal-assisted UV digestion method. This method will not lead to secondary pollution since no oxidant was needed in the thermal-assisted UV photocatalysis digestion process, which made it more compatible with electrochemical detection of TP. 展开更多

We report a new approach for the self-assembly of cuboid micro-parts onto Si substrates to construct three-dimensional microstructures. To perform assembly, the Si substrates are prepared with a deep cavity array as binding sites. An aggregate composed of hundreds of uniformly aligned micro-parts is formed at the C10F18-H2O interface. The micro-parts are arranged by passing the substrate through the aggregate of micro-parts, thus the micro-parts are left on the substrate, and then the substrate is vibrated ultrasonically in the solution, making it possible for the micro-parts to fall into the cavities on the substrate. Finally the substrate is pulled out of the solution after assembly. This technique could give a high yield of up to 70%, providing a new method for micro-assembly. 展开更多

Mode matching is the key to improve the performance of micro-machined vibrating ring gyroscopes.Mass and stiffness asymmetries can lend to normal modes badly mismatch for gyroscopes fabricated by single-crystal silicon.The mismatch of the normal nodes results in large normal mode frequency split and degraded sensitivity.To address this issue,a Silicon-On-Insulator(SOI) wafer is used to fabricate the sensor chips.Meanwhile,a compensate disk and the backside coated negative photo resist(AZ303) is employed to weaken the Lag and Footing effect during the Deep Reactive Ion Etching(DRIE) process.Test results reveal that frequency split between the normal modes is of less than 10 Hz before the following electronic tuning.Thus,the mode matching of the electromagnetic vibrating ring gyroscope is probable to be realized. 展开更多

Using hexagonal boron nitride(h-BN)to prepare resistive switching devices is a promising strategy.Various doping methods have aroused great interest in the semiconductor field in recent years,but many researchers have overlooked the various repetitive anomalies that occur during the testing process.In this study,the basic electrical properties and additive protrusion behavior of Ga-ion-doped h-BN memristors at micro–nanoscale during the voltage scanning process are investigated via atomic force microscopy(AFM)and energy dispersive spectroscopy.The additive protrusion behavior is subjected to exploratory research,and it is concluded that it is caused by anodic oxidation.An approach is proposed that involves filling the AFM chamber with nitrogen gas to improve the stability of memristor testing,and this method provides a solution for enhanced testing stability of memristors. 展开更多

In the present article hypoxanthine Cu + is shown to be adsorbed on the electrode surface in the presence of an excess of copper(Ⅱ). After accumulation period, hypoxanthine Cu + was stripped from the electrode surface and the anodic current coming near to the oxidation of Cu(Ⅰ) to Cu(Ⅱ) was measured. A linear calibration curve in the range of 5 nmol/L 1.5 mmol/L hypoxanthine, with a detection limit of 0.5 nmol/L hypoxanthine were obtained. 展开更多

This letter proposes a novel design of a Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) device featuring a metal grating vibratory mierostructure driven by electrostatic force to sense the spatial electric field. Due to the advantages in slide-film damping and large vibration amplitude, such a device makes atmospheric packaging a low-cost option for practical manufacture. In this letter, we present the operating principles and specifications, the design structure, as well as the finite element simulation. Computational analysis shows that our design obtains good results in device parameters setting, while its simplicity and low-cost features make it an attractive solution for applications. 展开更多

A point-of-care test system has been studied in this paper.It was used to determine substances in blood such as Hemoglobin (HB),Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST),Creatine Kinase (CK) and so on.Based on the principle of amperometric determination,the research on detecting weak current signals was carried on.At the same time as to the weak signals (nA level),magnifying,sampling and processing the signals were also studied.Controlled by ADUC824 and assisted by other units, every substance could be determined automatically and rapidly integrated with the corresponding biosensor.In the experiment, the minimum detectable current of the instrument (YT2005-1) is 0.2 nA.With regard to the 1 nA which the experiment demanded,it could be up to the mustard.And the system can provide results in 180 s with a long term stability. 展开更多

A new type of disposable thin-film amperometric biosensor has been developed for measurement ofβ-hydroxybutyrate and total cholesterol in serum.The biosensor consists of two plain gold electrodes mounted on a Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate.The reagent solution contains bienzymes (cholesterol oxidase and cholesterol esterase for total cholesterol,β-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase and diaphorase forβ-hydroxybutyrate respectively) with mediator (ferricyanide) were absorption at the surface of electrodes coated by electrodepositing platinum black.The presence of the mediator lowers the applied potential and eliminates the interference from other oxidizable species enhancing the sensitivity and selectivity of the biosensor without modifying the dynamic parameters of the response.The enzymes stably retains in the matrices of platinum black film improving the performance of the mediated sensor.The linearity is observed in the concentration range from 1.0×10-4 to 1.0×10-2 mM and 1.0×10-4 mM to 4.99×10-3 mM with sensitivity of 1.958μA/mM and 2.447μA/mM respectively.The optimized biosensor exhibits excellent reproducibility and stability retaining more than 90% of its original activity over a period of one month.The simple operation of the biosensor mass-produced at low cost is expected to find clinical application and homecare. 展开更多

An enzyme biosensor for amperometric measurement of aspartate aminotransferase has been developed.The working electrode was modified with a thin-film of redox polymer,then glutamate oxidase,with the immobilized reagent cast and dried on the electrode.The biosensor responses to AST by detecting hydrogen peroxide were produced by enzymical reaction at-0.1 V with a response time of 120 seconds.The electrode gave a detection limit of 32.5 U/L with a linear concentration range of 32.5 U/L~2000 U/L in serum.Due to more sensitive and lower detection limit,the biosensor is expected mainly to be used for physiological identification and physical performance of athletes in the future.Extended application will also affect the practice of clinical medicine for the diagnosis of heart and liver disease. 展开更多

Amperometric biosensor applied to the determination of high concentration lactate in serum and whole blood was described.The biosensor was constructed by gold electrode modified with nanoplatinum particles.Lactate oxidase (E.C.1.1.3.2) was immobilized at platinized activated gold electrode which was used for the determination of high concentration lactate at low potential (+0.2 V).The linear calibration graphs were obtained from 1 to 21 mmol·L~ (-1) lactate in serum and from 0.9 to 13.2 mmol.L~ (-1) lactate in whole blood.The correlation coefficients were 0.99 and 0.97,respectively at a steady-state response time of 50 s. 展开更多

Flexible tactile sensors have broad applications in human physiological monitoring,robotic operation and human-machine interaction.However,the research of wearable and flexible tactile sensors with high sensitivity,wide sensing range and ability to detect three-dimensional(3D)force is still very challenging.Herein,a flexible tactile electronic skin sensor based on carbon nanotubes(CNTs)/polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)nanocomposites is presented for 3D contact force detection.The 3D forces were acquired from combination of four specially designed cells in a sensing element.Contributed from the double-sided rough porous structure and specific surface morphology of nanocomposites,the piezoresistive sensor possesses high sensitivity of 12.1 kPa?1 within the range of 600 Pa and 0.68 kPa?1 in the regime exceeding 1 kPa for normal pressure,as well as 59.9 N?1 in the scope of2.3 N?1 in the region of<0.6 N for tangential force with ultra-low response time of 3.1 ms.In addition,multi-functional detection in human body monitoring was employed with single sensing cell and the sensor array was integrated into a robotic arm for objects grasping control,indicating the capacities in intelligent robot applications. 展开更多

Parkinson’s disease(PD)is characterized by a progressive degeneration of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons.The precise mechanisms are still unknown.Since the neuronal communications are inherently electrical and chemical in nature,dual-mode detection of PD-related neuroelectrical and neurochemical information is essential for PD research.Subthalamic nucleus(STN)highfrequency stimulation(HFS)can improve most symptoms of PD patients and decrease the dosage of antiparkinsonian drugs.The mechanism of STN-HFS for PD still remains elusive.In this study,a silicon-based dual-mode microelectrode array(MEA)probe was designed and fabricated,and systematic dual-mode detection methods were established.The recording sites were modified using Pt nanoparticles and Nafion to improve the signal-to-noise(SNR)ratio.To evaluate its applicability to PD research,in vivo electrophysiological and electrochemical detection was performed in normal and hemiparkinsonian models,respectively.Through comparison of the dual-mode signals,we demonstrated the following in a PD monkey:(1)the maximum dopamine concentration in the striatum decreased by 90%;(2)the spike firing frequency increased significantly,especially in the region of the cortex;(3)the spectrogram analysis showed that much power existed in the 0–10 Hz frequency band;and(4)following repeated subthalamic nucleus high-frequency stimulation trials,the level of DA in the striatum increased by 16.5μM,which led to a better elucidation of the mechanism of HFS.The dual-mode MEA probe was demonstrated to be an effective tool for the study of neurological disorders. 展开更多

This paper presents a high performance electric field micro sensor with combined differential structure.The sensor consists of two backward laid micro-machined chips,each packaged by polymer and metal.The novel combined differential structure effectively reduces various environmental affections,such as thermal drift,humidity drift and electrostatic charge accumulation.The sensor is tested in near-ground place as well as balloon-borne sounding.In different weather conditions,the measurement results showed good agreement with those of the commercial electric field mill. 展开更多
